A desktop is kept at a still position and so the HDD remains still too, whereas a laptop is not always kept at a table like place and so It is not good to keep the HDD without proper support.

Hmm... take some aluminum foil from tobacco packages or from cooking supply stores... and stick them in the gaps of the hard drive. As much as possible. If possible, fold them up neatly into small little bricks.

Should work fine since paper itself when folded is quite solid, and since those are aluminum foils, they should conduct some heat from the HDD away, and... aluminum foils have always been successful in increasing wireless signals. :p

Or best use a duct tape till you get a proper fix for your HDD

Couldn't foil conduct electricity though?

very true, but an HDD also does that, so I don't see any problems with that.

With my previous Compaq desktop PC, the cradle was somewhat faulty and would allow the HD to move quite a bit. So I just folded up some normal writing paper and shoved it underneath, this simple trick got me through the 2 years in which I had that PC.
