i have recently reinstalled windows xp, and i wonder what anti virus software would you recommend to install, preferably a free one, but feel free to recommend others too.

Kaspersky Internet Security if you can pay.
AVG 8 + Comodo Firewall if you're cheap.

Nod32 is paid. The best free antivirus (IMO) is Avira Antivir, but be sure to use it with a spyware detector, such as Lavasoft adAware and Spybot S&D. Comodo Firewall is very good, among the very best. I highly recommend it.

I dont like nod32 because as of late ive been getting viruses and trojans and nod32 never stopped them or detect them, also they are real viruses and trojans and not false positives. I know nod 32 had the reputation of being king of antivirus progs but it is falling behind and i blame the developers for being lazy and riding their reputation the earned and not continue what was once great work.

Its the same with zonealarm security suite, where there was a version at the beginning of this year that was released or updated to where it nearly froze, more like turned my dual core 3ghz to 386 running vista and thats no counting other versions that caused blue screen of death on xp and wasting about the same and even worse than the earlier versions of norton.

Kaspersky is great but like nod32 it still allows viruses to go through, when all other antivirus apps, even the free ones detected.

The best is surprisingly noton internet security 2008 or norton 360, they're pratrically identical except norton 360 is more for the dumb user where there is little customisation needed. Oh for these versions solve the issue with hogging the cpu and ram so put that argument against norton to rest, heck i got antispyware programs that use more resources.

All the free stuff is great until you get infected with vundo, sure there free tools to remove it but not the new version of the vundo and norton is 2008 best for that and seconded by norton 360 no other app other than superantispyware and pc tools spyware doctor can stop them.... Yes i am surprised antispyware progs can remove them, sure technically they trojan but when it infects explorer.exe and winlogon.exe it may kill winxp and vista installations and it happened to me and my friends computer...

Oh before i go, i am aware that the apps may detect vundo and it say it removes it but it does not remove it from explorer.exe and winlogon.exe as well as not stopping hidden services that will replicate itself once it is removed.

eh i dont know about norton, maybe their new stuff is a bit better (havnt tried it and i dont really plan on it either) but they have put out nothing but resource hogging crap that is hard as hell to uninstall in the past and im still skeptical on their products.

Panda Internet Security 2008 is one of the best, manly because it's complete... Antivirus/Antimalware/Firewall/Antispam/Antiphising/Protection against unknown threats.... and very good in everything.

Also, unlike Norton (I tried Norton Internet Security 2008), it doesn't take all your RAM to itself.

So, if you have money, buy it and you can forget about virus. It's worth your money.

Take a test, if you have other antivirus and do a free online scan:

Free online antivirus. Download ActiveScan 2.0 and clean your PC. Panda Security

Seriously, why do you even need a antivirus program?

All you need is a decent firewall, common sense, and you then will never need one...;)

Saves all the hassle of false positives.
thats the way i look at it as well, but i suppose it depends on what the computer is being used for.

NO!!!! God no! Seriously, NO!!!
I am of a firm belief that all ISPs should file a class action lawsuit against Symantec and McAfee for reparations for the millions of man hours spent supporting their horrible antivirus programs. I am not kidding. (Can you tell I work for an ISP?)

Norton WILL arbitrarily block mail servers for no particular reason, and not give the user any indication that it did it. If it's in a particularly bad mood, it'll just cut your internet off altogether. I spend half my time supporting this garbage and does Symantec give us a penny for the trouble? No. Add to that it's terrible bloatware, it doesn't work so hot, and you have to pay for it, and it is epic fail.

Now, that said, as bloody ironic as this is going to sound, the absolute best AV software I've used to date is Symantec AntiVirus Corporate. You'd think it would be the same garbage but it isn't. It's very minimalistic. You forget it's there until it catches something. It's not bloated at all, doesn't bog your machine. I wish I knew why they didn't market THIS AV to end-users instead of that Norton bull****. Symantec AV is far superior.

right on. Most of our customers problems (even though we arent an internet company) are due to mcafee home edition or nortons security suites. we usually tell them to GTF off it and use AVG.
