I don't know about other countries, but here in the US energy drinks have become a fad. These are typically (not always) small ~8.4fl oz/250ml cans of a soda-like drink that is high in caffeine, vitamins like B6 and B12, and other oddball things like taurine. Some have about as much caffeine ass a cup of coffee, others have considerably more. It also costs about 2-3x the price of a normal 12oz can of soda, $2-$3.
Working night shift has led me to become a bit of a connoisseur of energy drinks, even with enough sleep during the day I find myself often fighting that internal clock that keeps telling my brain that it's night and therefore time to sleep. I also tend to drink them a couple of hours before I hit the gym, as they give me a little extra boost.
Many energy drinks are limited to regions of the US, so the more common drink in one state may not even be sold in the next state over. The most common nation-wide one would probably be Red Bull (www.redbull.com). The taste is.. well, it tastes like somewhat fruit-flavored carbonated metal. This sounds bad, but it's really a taste you need to try to understand. They have a sugar-free version that I drink which tastes less fun. Red Bull is one of the tamer energy drinks, it doesn't have many ingredients and it's content of caffeine and vitamins is fairly low.
There's a relatively new one called Spike (BiotestDotNet 3.0) sold in the Cali/Nevada area. The ingredients are pretty insane. The website shows vitamin B12 - *16,670%* of the recommended daily amount in one can. The can I have here says *25,000%*. It's also got warnings all over it, and it's not to be sold to anyone under 18. The Wikipedia article drives home how dangerous this stuff is. The sick thing is that for being potentially hazardous, it tastes really good! It's like a fizzy strawberry soda. It's also diet by nature, no carbs, sugar, or calories. Man, if they made a plain soda version of this I'd buy it all the time!
The last one I will mention is a doozy.. It's called Cocaine. Yes, that's it's name. Cocainedrink.com - The Best drink energy Resources and Information. This website is for sale!. They recently decided to stop selling it simply because of the name. This also has a Wikipedia article about the controversy (I haven't seen the new brand yet). Seems dumb to me, I mean we've been able to buy a drink called "Coke" for years. This drink's taste is new.. I mean it's really, really hard stuff. It's like a soda version of hot cinnamon candies. It really burns the inside of the mouth and throat. Still, it tastes pretty good. I like it the same way some people like very spicy food. The burn is just a part of the experience. I actually just had a can last night after a coworker of mine scored some from a secret source. Despite the bizarre taste and crazy name it's not as potent as Spike. It does have 100% Vitamin C tho. Yay! 8)
Anyone have any favorites? I'm always looking for something new to try.
