i dont know if you fools can already tell but im an avid doom player and ive been doing level designing for myself for a while now too. im curious as to how you guys prefer to play doom. by that i mean do you prefer to play on a source port such as doomsday (my personal fav) or zdoom/gzdoom (not bad features for level makers to play with) or do you guys like to go old skool with doom for either msdos or the windows 95 and xp compatible versions? do you like to keep the old skool funky monkeyj pixilated graphics or do you like to have it rendered with modern things like open gl or direct 3d? do you guys play with custom high rez textures and fancy 3d models or do you stay true to the original design?

i myself like using doomsday with opengl rendering and no hi rez ultra fancy crap (although i do have tons of that stuff stored on my pc for a rainy day just to play around with). im more of a doom 64 style guy and i try to find levels and stuff that resemble the darker, gloomy feel of the 64 version as it kicks major buttmonkey ass.

discuss and amuse me.

there are quite a few, doomsday and zdoom/gzdoom (opengl version). some others are legacy, skulltag, boom. i prefer doomsday due to the numorus add-ons it has available but zdoom/gzdoom are able to incoprerate more modern level designing features(slopes, room over room, underwater effects, reflections, 3d bridges, etc.) zdoom/gzdoom is excellent for building custom levels for due to the vast amount of design compatible features.

Are they freeware?
Can you play online multiplayer?
Nope, not freeware, although you can get the shareware version for free, and that's a good third of the full game. They knew how to make a good demo back then :thumb:

As for multiplayer, I'm pretty sure most of the updated versions support it, though I don't play doom MP myself these days.

i like zdoom or doomsday. one problem i have is connecting to the master server on doomsday. zdaemon is fun though :p i seriously want to try doomsday online though, if anyone wants to play, pm me since i have the doom, doom 2, tnt and plutonia wad files so no game version problems would arise :) plus i have the heretic/hexen wads if anyone wants to play them as well :)

edit - if anyone uses hamachi and wants to play the network details are:
Network Name: JJXB-Doomsday
Network Pass: Doom

yes. all of them to my knowledge. google doomsday to find the home site of that source port. you should try zdoom/gzdoom as well. i

btw, if you like doom 64 (the game that was released on the N64 with all new graphics, enemy designs, levels, etc), google "doom 64 absolution TC". its a pc port of the game that was made by a bunch of mappers who extracted the textures, music and stuff from the ROM of the game and recreated the levels down to the smallest detail from scratch which is an incredible thing to do. it is a near perfect recreation of the 64 version that has mouselook features, new levels, new enemies and 2 add on level packs that were not in the offical 64 release. its extremely addicting and i highly suggest you check it out. it runs on a stand-alone modified doomsday engine so trying to play it on a regular doomsday beta will not work.

if your talking about the doom IWADS themselves, yeah those are not freeware. the source ports are though, but you are required to have the IWADS for doom in order to play them. you basically need to own doom to use the sourceports, the ports do not come with doom itself.

yeah i have trouble doing that too lately. i think they are going to fix that in the next beta (6).

Yeah, that's what I meant, I could've been a lot clearer though. Thanks for clearing that up mate.

Just noticed the Tenebrae post up there, it's a damn shame that project got canned. I remember being pretty stunned the first time I seen rickety old Quake 1 running on that.

Another great thing about doomsday is its support for hexen, heretic and the other of that kind :p By the way i remember there was a really flashy Quake 1 Graphics upgrade some while ago... Gotta dig that up and check the progress :D

Edit:
Looks like the project somehow died back then... :(
Tenebrae 2.0
zdoom/gzdoom has heretic and hexen support as well. the quake I thing i think your looking for is called "glquake". its a source port that renders quake in opengl.

i found this site a while ago and i have been fooling around with it trying to get at least one of these maps to work but so far all ive gotten is it to play but with alot of lag, i figured maybe some of you guys would be intrested in looking at these. i beleive they are for either doomsday or risen 3d, and graphic wise they are very doom 3 quality. maybe not doom 3 quality but you get the idea. i cant play doom 3 on this computer as it isnt powerful enough, i get serious lag in big rooms or with alot of fancy fancy lighting so these are the closest i might be able to get.

doomsday engine, but not with the new 3d objects. I still like the oldschool look, but the wasd+mouse feel is an improvement.

However, jumping should be illegal. One does not bunny-hop in DOOM, therefore that gets turned off in doomsday...
jumping in doomsday or in zdoom can actually mess you up, since the engine isnt true 3d, you can get stuck in places if you jump where you really shouldnt be. its happened to me a few times before so i just removed the option altogether from the config. file. i dont like 3d objects either, they dont look natural. i do however, for doomsday at least, have objects like lights and torches have halos and lens flares, it looks REALLY nice in games like hexen.

there is a bug you guys should know about in doomsday, be careful, VERY careful about saving right next to ledges, like so close you will fall if you get closer. ive done that before and when i save and reload, i fall through the wall and i get stuck. this can be fixed with a no clip command but on some versions of doomsday that command doesnt exist so you could end up screwing yourself over if you arnt careful.

It tried doomsday.

I must say i'm quite impressed by what I played.
I didn't know these kinds of project existed.

thanks jonc2006 for revealing a hidden gem. :)
there are a ton of addons for doomsday that are hard to find at the moment because they are doing some work on their website. if your intrested i can send you some of my mods and stuff that can really show you the power of the doomsday engine. doomsday is only the tip of the iceberg, you should try all the source ports. some have features other dont and so forth.

for doom i have a mod that adds rain effects in a few levels, its really cool. ive got a file that will replace the standard MIDI's with the psx doom soundtrack. ive got hi rez menu and title screens, 3d models for both enemies and objects, custom water/slime/blood/lava textures that are really beautiful, although they would work better on hexen. anyway if you want them just let me know.
