Hello everybody!

Can anyone recommend me a good DSL modem, I have a connection of 1.5mb and it doesn't feel like that.:(

I have an old modem from 3 or 4 years old, speedstream 5200.

Which brand and model is good for me?

I'm not sure that an 'old' modem would cause your speed to decrease. It might be worth testing your connection on dslreports.com or some other site that tests your bandwidth. I've had a Westell 2200 for a few years now and I haven't had any issues with it (got it free w/ DSL).

Getting a new DSL modem will not speed up your internet. Somewhere far away at the isp, they have a computer with your phone line settings, and in thoes settings they have a little meter that tells your internet speed. On the side of their compuyer, there is a slot that takes $20 bills. The gurus that work there get all the mail with the payments, and open each letter and feed the money into the slot for your computer. The more money that is fed into your section, the higher the meter reads and the faster your internet goes.

I tested this theory once when I took my DSL modem to a freinds house where he has a slower service than i do but the same ISP. I used my modem and user name and password, and connected at the same 320Kbits that he got with his modem and password. (my service is 4.5 megabits.)

I later asked another friend who is a works for nortel, with internet and phone technologies and he confirmed that the speed of your internet service is not controled by the modem or your username and password, but by the isp where they set the limits on your phone line. However, i didnt metion the money slots and gurus, so i cant prove that part.

I had the same problem you have when i had dsl connection. I doubt its your dsl modem. I had same modem for past 4 years or so. At my first house I got 1.5 and no problems. Second house 700mps and no connection problems. Third house with the same modem 700-1.5 with disconnects up to 5 times a day. As you can see the pattern its not the modem. Call up your ips and see if they can test your connection.

If that doesn't work you can get ISP technician and fix the problem. I had problems recently with my cable modem disconnecting alot and technician fixed it today.

hmm i know that a router will limit your internet connection...
