If you go scuba diving, and you buy the most expensive equipment ever, with the best of everything humanly imaginable... but your air tank has a leak, are you any safer? Not really. By the time you'll need anything else you'd already be dead.

Same logic if you don't update. If you're not going to let Microsoft see your computer and fix it, than you're letting the rest of the world into it. Your choice - the professionals, or the hackers. Pretty obvious choice if you ask me...
Did you read the bit about obtaining critical status security updates via another source? Even then I don't dl all of them, like if there's an update saying "Critical security loop-hole in Windows Live Messenger when connecting via port 80" or something then I'm just gonna ditch it. The only M$ apps I use are MS Office and WMP 9, that's it.

Schedule updates for when you're in bed fool.
You fool I don't keep my PC on when I'm in freakin' bed and put my MSN status to Away  Electricity's damn expensive and the last thing I want while sleeping is the UPS making sharp loud beeps when the power goes out.

It's not "infinite TBs"....if you update regularly you might be looking at 20-50mb or so.
^ Epic fail. When I installed Windows 7 on a 11GB partition and installed some basic apps along with it, I only had 350MB of free space, but after a day or so it filled up almost 100% and only like 3.1MB of free space was lost. I think 297MB of data somehow magically entered my PC and filled it up.

Or wait...could it be? Could it possibly be that it was some stupid updates as the last time I shut down my PC I got a message saying "Please do not turn off your PC. Installing updates 1 of 23"

These updates might come in handy with an OS like Win7 since its fairly new, but with something that's as refined as XP SP3 there's hardly a need for it IMO.

You also need to get out of this mentality that updates add functionality, because that's rarely the case.
When did I say they add functionality??? oO Provide quotes please....

Well.. I like to update the windows, but I have nothing against those who choose not to update it. I can even understand why people with slow internet connection doesn't update it. I can imagine the pain in the ass for the first update in a 300kbps connection.

Pfft, I feel bad for my few remaining friends with 56k. I mean, the updates can be in the 20MB range some times.. = 20480Kbytes / 5 Kbytes (avg dialup speed) = 4096 seconds, or 68 minutes.

And for some reason most of the people I know are unable to connect at around 56k, the remaning servers around here suck and the phone lines are poor in some areas, so 30k is more likely. (Usually it'll connect at 48k and then drop back to 33k) = ~83minutes for 20MB.

Umm, swap file?
Nope :p

1) Swap files would've been there when I had 300MB space too, so it doesn't make any difference.
2) I'd just booted into Windows, nothing was running. In fact, there must have been more page filing when I had 300MB free space and many FF tabs were open then when I just booted in.

did you actually unhide hidden files, add your account to the system restore folders permissions list and look inside the folder.

its really not.

I've managed to restore computers back from Virus destruction by booting to BartPE and replacing the entire registry with that backed up in the system restore folder.
