"On Tuesday, Microsoft was granted US Patent No. 7,536,726 (it was filed in 2005) for intentionally crippling the functionality of an operating system by 'making selected portions and functionality of the operating system unavailable to the user or by limiting the user's ability to add software applications or device drivers to the computer' until an 'agreed upon sum of money' is paid to 'unlock or otherwise make available the restricted functionality.' According to Microsoft, this solves a 'problem inherent in open architecture systems,' i.e., 'they are generally licensed with complete use rights and/or functionality that may be beyond the need or desire of the system purchaser.' An additional problem with open architecture systems, Microsoft explains, is that 'virtually anyone can write an application that can be executed on the system."

I always found it easier to go legit with windows. It's a matter of $200-$250 every few years so I don't have to worry about the constant headache of trying to keep a non-legit version updated.
Unless you change hardware often and have to call microsoft every two weeks because your legal version will no longer pass validation. **** that.

P.S.: 'Someone I know' who has a pirated version of XP has been using the same version for three years and it still passes WGA checks.
Proof? Even if there is a problem, what are the likelihoods that a Windows update fixed that problem. Regardless of that, 5 minutes of Googling usually leads to a quick and easy answer.
Likelihood that it will FIX the problem? Not very likely. Likelihood that it would have PREVENTED a problem? More likely.

Do you not update your drivers either?

I update hardware often enough and the odd time I've had to call MS for an activation, it's been pretty painless.

But what about this.

I owned a Laptop that has a legal XP on it. The laptop breaks. So I figure "Well, I can use the XP disk with my desktop right? Since it would still only be installed on one PC, which should be acceptable following the "One software license, one PC rule." WRONG! Tried it once, even called Microsoft and they said they couldn't let me use the license with my desktop. Bull***.

I update all my drivers regularly....I just avoid connecting M$'s servers as far as possible. No stupid IE7, WMP11 or WLM downloads that require WGA checks during installation (it might still pass as BigIg said, but there's no assurance, plus the benefit from the 3 is also very minimal IMO).

Firefox + K-Lite Codec Pack + Emesene FTW!

Till you consider what the call charges are for the other side of the world........

You had a moron on the phone then. Just call again and get a new rep. They're supposed to let you transfer an OEM license if the hardware was replaced due to malfunction. Although it COULD make a difference if you have some proprietary HP license or something, I've never had to deal with that.

Mind you, I've been on the same license through multiple hardware revisions. Most MS reps know and just don't care.

If it's mission-critical for you to have a transferable license, you're supposed to get a retail copy, not OEM.

The LEAST of windows updates deal with things like IE or WMP.
The important ones patch security holes, improve performance, and fix bugs.

Any MS numbers I've ever had to call have been Toll Free

You do know demi that post is just like painting a bulls eye on your forehead
Don't shoot !!!!! Seriusly... My Windows is Active, I use Windows Update, it's cool, specially in Vista, it installs all updated drivers automatically. I don't mind microsoft sniffing around my system like a mad dog at all. You gotta be part of the community. :D

Anyway... To be very honest... The last Windows I had problems with files getting corrupted was Windows 98. After XP the only problems I had was with viruses, spywares and adwares. Damn.. I remember the time back around 2003, every place in the net were infested with spywarez, you could barely navigate the web.
^ I was just j/k though i for one always keep my drivers up to date from the manufactures site, honestly the ones at microsoft are old, some can be very old...

Yeah........still easier to pull off an ISO in 3 hours from the net though.....

Security loopholes? Oh yeah I have something that deals with those, its called a third party firewall. As for security updates which have "critical" status, I've managed to find a reliable source from the net that packs them into an exe and then you can download and install them without even touching M$. And what if it tried to connect during installation? Well I physically disconnect my network cable whenever I install anything published by M$

Yes I know I'm a tad paranoid.

Its the only way I've never experienced WGA even once during my 4 years of running pirated XP :p
Can someone explain to gamefreak why not updating windows is foolish in terms he'll understand? I seem to be failing.

I've never updated my OS, And i'm using the newest WLM...
What's the useful thing about updating the OS?, Security loopholes?..bull****. I'm using Kaspersky the full security internet + Firewall. Improves the Performance?. Give me a break. Btw, I can Update Pirated Xp or vista..but no use of it.
Not all updates are helpful some are quite a bloat it depends on internet conection, system config, but i wouldnt go as far to say that all are useless, some are useful i for one carefully select which updates to apply which not.
gamefreak and koko, stay out of IT please, for the good of humanity. :p

If you go scuba diving, and you buy the most expensive equipment ever, with the best of everything humanly imaginable... but your air tank has a leak, are you any safer? Not really. By the time you'll need anything else you'd already be dead.

Same logic if you don't update. If you're not going to let Microsoft see your computer and fix it, than you're letting the rest of the world into it. Your choice - the professionals, or the hackers. Pretty obvious choice if you ask me...

hackers everytime :) Jk, Anyway seing this thread has reminded me that i havent updated in about half a year, thanks for the reminder.

Windows updates are epic fail. The last thing I need on my already meager 300kbps connection is a stupid M$ updater downloading infinite TBs of updates that do nothing more then add a ****-load of blue-colored folder in my Windows folder and clog my already 80% full HDD even more.
well then, set it to check for updates manually, and only install the ones that are neccesary.
Schedule updates for when you're in bed fool. It's not "infinite TBs"....if you update regularly you might be looking at 20-50mb or so. You also need to get out of this mentality that updates add functionality, because that's rarely the case. Updates FIX PROBLEMS...most of the time you don't see it. Also, your hard drive wouldn't be so full if you didn't partition it into so many tiny pieces.
