"On Tuesday, Microsoft was granted US Patent No. 7,536,726 (it was filed in 2005) for intentionally crippling the functionality of an operating system by 'making selected portions and functionality of the operating system unavailable to the user or by limiting the user's ability to add software applications or device drivers to the computer' until an 'agreed upon sum of money' is paid to 'unlock or otherwise make available the restricted functionality.' According to Microsoft, this solves a 'problem inherent in open architecture systems,' i.e., 'they are generally licensed with complete use rights and/or functionality that may be beyond the need or desire of the system purchaser.' An additional problem with open architecture systems, Microsoft explains, is that 'virtually anyone can write an application that can be executed on the system."

Read this ****.
The wording of this makes it seem far more worse than it is.

I always found it easier to go legit with windows. It's a matter of $200-$250 every few years so I don't have to worry about the constant headache of trying to keep a non-legit version updated.
Unless you change hardware often and have to call microsoft every two weeks because your legal version will no longer pass validation. **** that.

P.S.: 'Someone I know' who has a pirated version of XP has been using the same version for three years and it still passes WGA checks.

I update hardware often enough and the odd time I've had to call MS for an activation, it's been pretty painless.
But what about this.

I owned a Laptop that has a legal XP on it. The laptop breaks. So I figure "Well, I can use the XP disk with my desktop right? Since it would still only be installed on one PC, which should be acceptable following the "One software license, one PC rule." WRONG! Tried it once, even called Microsoft and they said they couldn't let me use the license with my desktop. Bull***.

Well.. I like to update the windows, but I have nothing against those who choose not to update it. I can even understand why people with slow internet connection doesn't update it. I can imagine the pain in the ass for the first update in a 300kbps connection.
Pfft, I feel bad for my few remaining friends with 56k. I mean, the updates can be in the 20MB range some times.. = 20480Kbytes / 5 Kbytes (avg dialup speed) = 4096 seconds, or 68 minutes.

And for some reason most of the people I know are unable to connect at around 56k, the remaning servers around here suck and the phone lines are poor in some areas, so 30k is more likely. (Usually it'll connect at 48k and then drop back to 33k) = ~83minutes for 20MB.
