"On Tuesday, Microsoft was granted US Patent No. 7,536,726 (it was filed in 2005) for intentionally crippling the functionality of an operating system by 'making selected portions and functionality of the operating system unavailable to the user or by limiting the user's ability to add software applications or device drivers to the computer' until an 'agreed upon sum of money' is paid to 'unlock or otherwise make available the restricted functionality.' According to Microsoft, this solves a 'problem inherent in open architecture systems,' i.e., 'they are generally licensed with complete use rights and/or functionality that may be beyond the need or desire of the system purchaser.' An additional problem with open architecture systems, Microsoft explains, is that 'virtually anyone can write an application that can be executed on the system."

OMG LET'S OVERREACT!!!oneone!1111

Calm down. Jeez. This is just so windows customers can upgrade their windows version without buying a new one. This is a good thing, not a bad one. If someone gets Windows 7 Business, and in a year decides "Crap, I really could use that media center", then that person can pay a marginal fee to upgrade his software, as opposed to buying a new copy of windows.

I know a company's reason for doing something might be their original intent; but the power the patent gives the company wielding it still allows them to become just a bit more mac-ish.

I hope windows doesn't become a big bloated app-store.

No, I just feel people regard them unfairly because they're successful. They've made some mistakes, yeah, but nothing deserving of the sheer malevolence the general public regards them with. They can't do ANYTHING, good or bad, without people seeing some hidden agenda or conspiracy. I find the bandwagon M$ hate asinine.

It's not just this, Spyhop defends M$ in practically EVERY discussion about this topic. Jeez its a freakin' money-drunk capitalist corporation, there's no getting around that.

No, I just bring a modicum of reason into subject matter that people tend to regard very unreasonably.

So their crime is being a business and making money?
