Xenogears Audio Help Needed

5540 Views 38 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  hushypushy
Hi, I'm rekatively new to Emulation in general, but am intensely excited about the prospect of playing my old PS1 games on my PC. I picked Xenogears for my initial game to play again, since it is an old favorite, but am having some difficulty with the audio. The intro sequence has static in it with XA Audio options disabled, and with XA enabled, the sounds sound too fast or too slow, not in sync with the game.

My system:
AMD Athlon 64 3400+
1Ghz Ram
ATI Radeon X800 XT video card
SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Sound card

Config. Settings:
Plugin: Pete's OpenGL Driver 1.1.75
Author: Pete Bernert
Card vendor: ATI Technologies Inc.
GFX card: RADEON X800 XT Platinum Edition x86/MMX/3DNow!/SSE2

Resolution/Color:
- 1152x864 Fullscreen - NO desktop changing [32 Bit]
- Keep psx aspect ratio: off

Textures:
- B8G8R8A8
- Filtering: 6
- Hi-Res textures: 2
- VRam size: 128 MBytes

Framerate:
- FPS limitation: off
- Frame skipping: off
- FPS limit: 200

Compatibility:
- Offscreen drawing: 1
- Framebuffer texture: 0
- Framebuffer access: 0
- Alpha multipass: on
- Mask bit: off
- Advanced blending: off

Misc:
- Scanlines: off
- Line mode: off
- Unfiltered FB: off
- 15 bit FB: off
- Dithering: off
- Screen smoothing: off
- Screen cushion: off
- Game fixes: off [00000000]

And Audio:
P.E.Op.S. DSound Audio Driver 1.9
Mode: 2
Volume: 1
Reverb: 2
Interpolation: 1

XA Music:
Enable XA Music: Yes
Change XA Speed: Yes

Misc:
All un-checked

If someone could assist me I would be humbly honored!
Thanks again, if I need to post more info please let me know.

Wait, maybe it IS my monitor! This is an old one I'm using, and perhaps it becomes evident when using the emulator. Hmmm.
yeah that's how it is for me. i can barely see the line unless i concentrate on the screen..and certain programs really bring it out. it's like my old Sony LCD, it has 1 dead pixel, but you can only notice it when doing certain things.
But haven't you tried forcing vsync yet? If it's a line that goes from the top of the display to the bottom, in a constant pace and all the way down, then vsync will fix it.
The VSYNC seems to have made an incredible difference, thanks all! Can't wait to immerse myself again in this deep game.

BTW, one last question regarding Xenogears: The sprites look awfully poor, even compared to the originals, unlike the backgrounds which look fantastic, any ideas on what I could change?
Nope....that's is already the limit of PSX emulation.
Why don't you try adjusting everything to quality int he Catasyst Control Panel?

mess with the texture filtering and hi-res textures. by pressing delete in game you can access that little menu to change filtering settings on the fly. just play around with that and see how you like it.
Well everything was working smoothly, until I hit one of the animation cutscenes, the first one in the desert where you meet Grahf, anyway the audio seemed fine- a little choppy, but the video would show a frame and then nearly freeze, stutter ALOT and finally catch up slightly, to wher I could barely tell what was going on.

Any suggestions?
Post your CDR config.

If possible, make an ISO image of the CD.

I am running it from an ISO I made myself.
Do you think it could possibly be the Sound Plug-in that's causing the problem?
I'm using Eternal SPU 1.41

XA:Enabled
SPU IRQ Hack: Disabled

Directsound : Buffer Size 64
Audio Out Method: Thread

Misc:
Show realtime config:disabled
Wait for XA buffer is free:Enabled

Special game fix:
Update before accessing register:disabled
SPU IRQ - Wait CPU action:disabled
SPU IRQ - Force interruption flag7:disabled

Hope this all helps!!

haha...yes, you got it.

Set to Async, Smooth with a buffer size of 32.

EDIT: Given your com specs, you can drive the buffer size to 4/8. This reduces further delay in sound transmission.
turn down either FE or FU one notch (or possibly both). try FE = 2 first.

OT: you have one hell of a computer. how much did that cost you? you are much better off than the dude with the 3400+ A64 and the S3 gfx card :p
OT: A X800 card in Singapore isn't cheap....costing as much as S$1100...I was wondering how much would it cost in the US?
Heh thanks, :emb:.
It was my Graduation / Birthday gift from my parents and grand-parents, I love it so much, my last computer was a P3 600 Mhz with a 32Mb Vid card so I'm extremely pleased to have this one.

BTW: What's FE and FU stand for?

Thanks all!

Yea, well I just started getting in to this emulation stuff, cut me some slack ;)
Sorry to bump, but for no reason my sound just decided to **** with me, and i'm getting some generic problems with audio, can't even really describe them, just some skipping, and minor repitition, I'm suing Eternal SPU 1.41, with the following options, please tell me what I can change:

Main options:
Enabled Sound (ADPCM): Enabled
Enable CDDA Sound: Disabled
Enable XA Sound: Enabled
Enable SPU IRQ: Disabled

Audio Device:
DirectSound / Buffer Size: 64
Audio Out Method: Thread

Misc.:
Show realtime config window: Disabled
Wait for XA buffer is free: Enabled
Cache VAG decode: Disabled
Fine Tune: 0
Reverb: Neill's

Special Game Fix:
Update before accessing register: Enabled
SPU IRQ - Wait CPU action: Enabled
SPU IRQ - Force interruption flag7: Enabled

Please please help on what I can do!!!
I'm using Soundblaster Audigy 2 sound card
Thanks

disable ALL those special game fixes. try buffer at 10 and audio out SPUasync--->smooth.
???
See Post #29...
There's still little bits of static at Buffer: 10 but only when I'm saving.

It seems kinda low....
Any other ideas?
try enabling the active config window in Eternal so you can adjust while you play. fool around and see if you can get something that works.
