Get all three or nothing. And don't let the second one's battle system stop you from getting to the third game.

Awesome story, it has.

Xenesaga? ;)
I think it's a pretty mediocre game in term of gameplay, and yes, get all three or none at all, the third game is the best one, doesn't mean that the other two was bad though, it's just... mediocre... imo.

it does feel like a movie at points though so I hope you don't mind sitting through lots of story.
Some parts are so story heavy you literally watch a 30 minute story scene, take 5 steps, and sit through one that's another 30-40 minutes. Still was a pretty decent game. One thing that bothered me a little bit was once you get a feel for the combat system it feels repetitive, further compounded by the number of battles in long areas of the same monsters. This is from what I remember about the battles in the first game though.

I hate the battle system on the second one.

But Xenosaga has a 10/10 story, hands down.

I bought all 3 a few weeks ago, and im at the final dungeon on Episode 2. Can't wait till episode 3.....the only problem is that KOS MOS was better in episode 1..

And the music is epic, even though there isn't much of it...

I only played the first one, about a year or so ago.

Story is pretty good, and for an early PS2 JRPG, it has a suprisingly good voice acting. I laughed so hard at the scene where some character called the main heroine "Bimbo!" The only negative thing I can say about the story is that it has a tendency to rely too much on some of the anime cliches, but in Xenosaga they are well presented and shouldn't annoy you much.

What bothered me the most, though, is the battle system speed. It's just waaaay too slow. IIRC, it took me like 15 minutes for 2-3 encounters. That's just too much time to spend on fighting monsters. The battle system itself is ok, not the best nor the worst I've seen, but I just wish it was faster.

It's all about the story.
That's what they said about the first one as well (Xenogears), but the person who put in the random encounters should be shot for ruining what otherwise would've been a great game. I'm still pissed off for not having been able to complete the game due to those making the game terribly repetitive.

Yep, Xenogears random encounter rate was among the worst out there, it just take 2.5 steps to enter one. :p
Though imo, the fast paced battle system and the fact that you can overpower the enemies rather fast still made me enjoyed the game.

lol I think I might pick up the trilogy. I played the second disc and liked it, and you guys are citing it as the worst disc so I might as well buy the series.
haha, poor you, im on the same shoes as you, i played xenosaga 2 first... which is quite a crazy thing to do,considering how insanely complex the story is.

Either way, I firmly believe that the Xenosaga series is some of the best stuff the previous console generation had to offer.

i consider all the whining about long cutscenes completely void, since they are excellently done and tell a fantastic storyline. also, by the third game they got the balance down very well.

I don't remember it being that bad an encounter rate, but I think because the battles were fun enough to play, I was okay with it. Or I kept running away. I can't remember.

I just played it again a few months ago and the encounter rate isn't bad at all. It's pretty much inline with other games of the time.

It is a RPG after all, not a movie.

But yeah xenosaga's plot is one convoluted story. I wish we'd see the whole Xeno saga put into action.

And as far as I recall, Xenogears was the 5th out of a planned 6 (don't know how they could follow the ending with a 6th one though).

Convoluted, but not so much so that paying attention won't give you the answers to your question. By the end of Episode 3, in any case. Very few questions are answered at the ends of 1 and 2.
