well, here goes, I have a total of only £1000 to spend.. and im stuck, first of all, this is my first time ever making my own pc so I have no clue at all what im doing, but everyone says its easy and saves a lot of money, so here goes, these are the things I have picked out so far:

Total to spend £1000

CPU = Core 2 Duo E8600 2x(3.33Ghz 6Mb Cache 1333 FSB) = £231.14
// https://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?IL-E8600 //£76.86

GPU = GeForce 9800GT SLI 1GB GDDR3(600MHz Core, 1GB 1800MHz GDDR3 Memory, 112 Stream Processors) = £98.33
// https://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?NOV-98GT1 //£670.53

RAM = OCZ Platinum 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2(066MHz RAM Speed, CAS 5-5-5-18 Timings, 2.1-2.2v VDIMM) = £51.74
// https://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?OCZ-8500PT //£618.79

MB = Gigabyte GA-EG45M-DS2H(Intel G45 - Socket 775 - PCI-E (x16) - DDR2 1066(O.C.)/800/667 - SATA II - Micro ATX) = £104.65
// https://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?GIG-EG45M //£514.14

SPU = X-FI Xtreme Gamer = £72.44
// https://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?CRE-XFIXG //£441.07

HDD = Western Digital Caviar(160GB Capacity, IDE Interface, 7200RPM Spin Speed, 8.9ms Average Seek Time, 8MB Cache) = £40.08
// https://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?WD-160JB //£401.62

DVD = Black 16xDVD 48xCDWrite = £9.20
// https://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?NOV-DVDCD9 //£392.42

PSU = OCZ Fatal1ty 550w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 = £64.39
// https://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?OCZ-F550 //328.03

£300 left LOL what else would I need to buy to make this pc? which case do I need, is their a certain size I must get because of the MB or something? I will be OCing the CPU to 4ghz-4.5ghz, Leads... do I need to buy certain leads to connect everything together? Is there anything else I would need to buy? also, will all that hardware work together and would it work on vista64?

Thanks for helping this has been a knightmare to get round to doing -_-'''

A full tower or mid tower should be sufficient for your needs. Pick anything that's stylish and sturdy. Picking a case is the fun and easy part as long as you get the right size.

In your case that would be full or mid.

Since you have some money left over. Now might be the time to accessorize a little. Get some led fans, maybe a cold cathode and add some ambiance to your case. Pick a color and go with it.

WAIT A SEC!
...you don't have an aftermarket CPU cooler. Pick yourself up a decent cooler for your cpu so you can get a good overclock.

Some good things already mentioned would be to pick a case, an aftermarket CPU cooler, and an SATA larger hard drive. The Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro or the Xigmatech HDT s1283 are my two (slightly biased) recommendations for the cooler, and hard disk size doesn't matter, but make sure you get an SATA one, and if you do have that much funds left, you may as well get two and use the other for backup and/or storage.

My own additional pieces of advice would be as follows.

With a build this costly, the PSU should be more futureproof. Step it up to a better quality one and higher wattage (600W to 800W is a good range). Sure, your PC may only need half, but with costly PCs, it's my opinion that it should last many upgrades and perhaps to the next build. Almost anything by PC Power & Cooling and Corsair will be good, and there's many others.

Secondly, get a better GPU. The GeForce GTX 260 (216) or the Radeon HD 4870 1GB, and the newer GeForce GTX 275 or Radeon HD 4890 would be the four best choices. The GeForce 9800GT is just the GeForce 8800GT, and while it's a decent GPU, I'd step it up some.

Also, I'd get different RAM. Personally, I prefer 800MHz RAM, since even at 4.5GHz, you'll only be running it at 900MHz (most 800MHz RAM will do this), but I know some people like 1066MHz RAM. Do know that larger numbers mean nothing. Running your RAM higher than your FSB does not help much, if at all, and sometimes even hurts. My biggest gripe with the RAM though is the timings. Look for 4-4-4-12 stuff if you can.

Overall though, you're heading in the right direction.

If your budget is hurting so badly you can't afford a 20 dollar dvd burner, you need to come down on that CPU. E8400. Also, Creative sucks, I recommend an Asus Xonar. Also, bigger SATA HD.....wtf 160gb.

I'm assuming you're not ignorant to the point to where you missed the budget. Surely that was either a mistake (afterall, none of us before you noticed it), or intentional for reasons other than cost, given the extra funds he has (although it was noted in another thread that the funds came down to 800 pounds, which should still be enough, and I'm not sure why this was cross posted).

Are you building a robot? Because that won't be of use.
If you are building R2D2, then that won't be of use.
If you are building a AI that will take over the world and calls itself skynet, then your close to doing that, just need many teraflops of data storage.

Sucks is relative. the Auzentech Prelude is king of all cards at this point in time. The Xonar, is built using a CMI chipset and is prone to random bouts of the channels swapping by themselves, as well as suffering from Cmedia's **** house drivers.
