A South Korean woman is celebrating after passing the written exam for a driving license - on her 950th attempt.

After four years of trying, 68-year-old Cha Sa-soon finally managed to secure the 60 out of 100 points needed to pass the test.

The grandmother has spent more than 5m won ($4,200, £2,600) on application fees for the test.

Now Mrs Cha, who lives in Jeonju, 130 miles (210km) south of Seoul, must pass the practical test to get on the road.

'Don't give up'

According to the Korean Driver's License Agency, the 50-minute written test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions on road regulations and car maintenance.

Mrs Cha had been trying to pass it since 13 April 2005, the Korea Times reported.

She wanted a license so that she could use a vehicle to sell vegetables and other goods, the newspaper said.

And her determination to pass the test has made her well-known at the Jeonju centre.

"She is really famous here. Not only agency employees but even some test-takers know her. Her challenging spirit is really amazing," one official was quoted as saying.

Speaking in February - after her 775th failure - Mrs Cha had appeared undaunted.

"I believe you can achieve your goal if you persistently pursue it," she told Reuters news agency.

"So don't give up your dream, like me. Be strong and do your best."

Now I can only guess she's going to be the "best driver ever". (/sarcasm)

Maybe she's a better practical driver than a theoretical one. You know, more of a do-er than a thinker.

950 times...? And they're still letting her drive?! Um...pardon me for saying this, but shouldn't people pass with 100% on their written tests? 60% seems way too low. I passed with 98%. I had missed one answer and then I studied the hell out of it after wards to make sure it was ingrained in my brain. Just saying...but 60% seems way too low. Maybe they just got tired of her and passed her so they could start seeing new faces.

In my country you only have to pay to get a driving license. No exams needed, no driving skills either. Talking about system corruption huh? :p

I know someone who failed their road test ten times in a row, and that was the worse I'd heard until this. And getting a score of 60% -- I'd be afraid to get in the car with her. And the money she spent.. I guess she'll now be spending a million dollars getting her road license.

Oh and that person who repeatedly failed the road test was also a South Korean -- maybe it's something particular to South Koreans? :p

950 times is freaking ridiculous.

i don't know how you can take the same test that much times; it must be torture ><
10 times is too much, 20 is hilariously ridiculous; 950 is so crazy its hard to believe. i'm still a bit skeptical of it, can people really be that dumb?

lots of the stuff on the written exams are dumb though IIRC.

i don't think you should have to get 100% to get your license, but i agree 60% might be too low.

the actual driving test is what is mainly important though. if you can drive great in practice, that's what really matters (and your ability to follow road-signs/traffic signals)
