XP sucks, for many reasons, win98 sucks for many reasons, winME sucks for many reasons, win 3.11 sucks for many reasons, win2k sucks for some reasons, UNIX sucks for some reasons, Linus sucks for some reasons, even FreeBSD sucks for some reasons.

I could list reasons for all, but Im tired and just wanted to get to 800 posts before I went to sleep. But my point is, why can't ANYONE make an OS that is good alround, networking, users, games, dos, uptime, bugless, and so on. I should write my own OS :)

If someone would make a *perfect* OS then there would be no need for any other OSes.
For most of us Linux is useless. Linux is for professionals, windows is for home users. There's no sense in making an OS which is command line based when the users (especially newbies) don't know what commands they have to use. That's why Linux is crap for home users (it's for professionals as I said). OK, you can use xfree to get a gui similar to win but it doesn't higher the software you can and that's the main prob of linux: too less home user software (to my mind it isn't a prob but for some people it is). It improved greatly during the last years but it's still far away from windows.
Linux is a good a and a *really* stable system, no question about it but that's why it is for professionals.
Windows, has much advances, newer versions of it (Win2k and XP) are finally stable and have a quite good compatibility and (the greatest advance against Linux) it's able to run a lot more software.

Here's a good link about that topic: http://www.stardock.com/stardock/articles/oswars2000.html

This posting may seem as it is very pro windows but I'm not so pro windows as it seems I would use linux if could do all the things which I can do on my windows.

BTW: I used the word professional quite often in this post, didn't I?

I like XP, it runs fast on my computer, and I have only had two BSoD but they were both releated to ATI beta drivers. My GF, loves the look of XP. I only have two problems with it. The license agreement requires me to upgrade it every two years (dirty MS trick) and It will be dificult to rebuild the Hard Drive should I need too because of the activation key.
Windows get a bad rap but for everything that it does, every hardware and software that it supports and will run. It is a decent peice of software. And all the control you have over hardware. I do not like Microsoft's business strategies, but I really dont have a problem with windows.

Ah the trip down memory lane. I've used every version of windows(inc nt) since 3.0, dos 5.0 - 6.22. I also have recently (sept) using linux as well but I would still consider myself a newbie in that arena.

I'd say that in linux is at the same stage as win 3.1/dos was in terms of being "user friendly". It will definately be interesting to see how this changes shapes up in later distros.

Anyways as for windows currently it would probably be 2K. 2K was the first version of windows that I was very impressed with.

My Favorite is 98 First Edition because I have never had any problems with it. It is also fast on my computer. Every version of windows requires a faster processor, more ram and more HD space for all the shit that it comes with. I never install any of the extra stuff that I don't need. Windows 95 was great, very small install size for the original version, but shitty USB support in OSR2.

Same here. I actually hated Windows before trying 2K. :)

XP is pretty good too, althought not as stable as Win2K yet.

I don't really have an all-time favorite Windows, but if I had to choose I'd say Windows 2000. I wasn't very impressed with it first but as I got to use it more and more I realized the incredible benefits of the OS. And now that I'm used to a stable, well-rounded OS, Windows ME (or 9x in general) seems a little awkward and I realized just how unstable it really was. I only use Windows ME for the programs that won't work on 2K. I assume Windows XP follows in W2K's footsteps but I think I'll hold off upgrading until I need it. I'm not the type to jump to a new OS just because it's the latest thing.

I used win 3.1 for 14 days.Worked well.

I used windows 95 for 3 months (when it crashed).

I used windows 98 for 10 months (when it gave problems for all the time and finally used to crash every 2nd day).

I am using windows ME for about an year.(No crashes,no problems, everything else except dos runs and surely games are much faster than anything else).

And people say that Windows Me is crap.

I think it all depends on how you tweak your os and how you use it.

Word.

My sis was so disappointed when I had to downgrade to 98SE for some troubleshooting. Every day she'd ask "can you reinstall it now?!" Sheesh :eyes:.
