This is good news for bussineses who are using legacy application that is currently not compatible with Windows 7. And this will shut up XP users from making stupid excuses or complaints about Windows 7. The only problem now that they will face is mainly the hardware side, which not all CPUs support virtualization, or run xp mode without hippcups or smoothly.

So what is left to blame or complain? The answer lies with the user's pc hardware :evil:

Since when posting news and discussing them is considered spam? And compared me to you, I have been here longer and have a much lower posts count, so who don't have a life here? =)

Yeah the RC, beta, or test version came out months ago, but this one is the official version and is fresh on Microsoft website for download.

Since this is a thread about the XP mode specifically I think it's reasonable to keep it open. So please, cool down a bit. Let's stick on topic and leave the personal attacks out of it, alright? :)

Many businesses still run Pentium 4s, which is fine for what most of them actually need. So this is pretty useless to them.
Correction: Only Intel's Pentium 4 672 and 662 series supports VT (virtualization technology). But yeah for the most part, anyone with P4 is pretty much screwed. And to be honest, all P4 machine or pcs should be sent to Africa so it can still be useful to some people.

It's already warm enough in Africa as it is. I suggest sending them to Russia instead so they can use them as central heating.

Anyway, I think it's a nonsense argument you're giving anyway. Why would a sales department have to switch when they have their socket 478 Pentium 4 systems, used for just spreadsheet apps, replaced for newer fancier systems? It's all about costs versus benefits, and if Windows 7 doesn't give benefits they won't upgrade simply because it saves them money. XP Mode or not, it's about costs vs benefits. These kind of systems are still capable enough anyway, provided there's enough RAM. On the other hand, they've probably been written off anyway, so economically they're due for an upgrade.

XPM was never in beta, it has been available as a full functional addon to Windows 7 beta from the start. its just a tacked together preinstall of xp using VPC.

Can't use it on my desktop since my CPU doesn't support virtualization. Tried it out on my laptop though and still couldn't get my old app working. Kinda funny too, since VirtualBox does the job just fine without even requiring virtualization.

Absolutely.

My work desktop is still a Pentium 4 and I still use it for intensive CAD work. Although I cannot run our companies latest 3D software package (Revit) I can still use Autocad 2010 and Autocad 2010LT without too many dramas, so upgrading to Windows 7 is not really needed at this point.

Nor will our systems manager upgrade all of our OS's as the cost issue has arisen. All of the machines (some of them merely a few months old) are running XP and to upgrade them all to Windows 7 (total of 12 machines) will cost thousands and thousands of dollars for features that we will not be using. When it comes time to upgrade the server and to get new machines we will most likely get Windows 7 then, but to upgrade the existing machines is not cost effective at the moment.

I had it installed for a while on my old 32bit win 7 install but got rid of XPM once I got the last of my software installing correctly on 7.

I think it will be useful for SOME people but not others as most programs are fine for 7 by now (Currently updated software) and even a LOT of older stuff installs fine too even if it does need a shove to help it along

Cid has already said the admins are fine with this one as its a XPM thread, not a intentional Win 7 thread!

Just to add though, Do people realise that users with HOME PREMIUM or lower editions of 7 CAN NOT INSTALL XPM?
