I have SP2's firewall disabled, and those auto updates, and I have no net problems. BTW, is there anyway to get rid of that damn red-x shield?
Open up a command dialog and type "net stop wscsvc" then enter and it should disappear. Set the service startup option to manual or disabled if you don't want it starting anymore.

One way to disable the service is to open up Computer Management (Right Click My Computer > Manage) then expand Services and Applications, then Click Services, Find Security Center, then right click, click Properties, then click the "Startup Type" drop down box (which probably says Automatic) and select Disabled. Click Ok and there you go.

You could also open up the Services screen by clicking Start, Run and typing services.msc.

The reason Windows gets viruses is because it is the most used Operating System in the world. The reason other Oses like various linux distros and OSX don't get viruses written for them, is that it is not worth the writers time to do so for a minority operating system.

As linux begins to gain ground on Windows (and please let it happen quickly) more and more virus writers will begin to write for it.

I am quite happy with my inux and windows dualboot, best thing I ever did.
