I have SP2's firewall disabled, and those auto updates, and I have no net problems. BTW, is there anyway to get rid of that damn red-x shield?

Open up a command dialog and type "net stop wscsvc" then enter and it should disappear. Set the service startup option to manual or disabled if you don't want it starting anymore.
