-XFX Radeon hd 4350 512 mb ddr2
-XFX geforce 8600 512 mb ddr2

easy partypooper, i don't think you should recommend that he get a gts250 when you cannot be sure that his system can take it. although i do agree with you that the ddr3 8600gt would be best out of those.
then again, if you did stretch your budget a bit more longevidad, you may be able to get something far better. how much can you spend?

Not factoring in GDDR3 VS DDR2, it'd be one of the 9400s according to this list:
Graphics Card Ranking (5th Time And Last) (Updated Daily) - Overclock.net - Overclocking.net

But factoring GDDR3 makes things more complicated since there isn't 2 seperate listing for the GDDR3 and DDR2 8600. Unless you're gonna try running Crysis, I'd imagine 256MB would be fine, but with tons of AA you may need more...

Also, instead of a Radeon 4350, there's the 4550 which has nearly the same rank as the 9400 on the list I linked above and is about the same price as the 9400 as well.

That list is wrong and compiled by someone who doesn't know what they're talking about. the 8600gt is just a 9500gt with slower clocks and a larger die and is faster than a 9400gt in everything, even if the 8600gt only had ddr2. remember, when it comes to GPU nomenclature, the important part is generally the second number in the name, i.e. 6 is higher than 4, so the 8600 is superior to the 9400. this is almost always the case as long it's only a one generation gap between cards (the first number denotes generation - in this case 9 is only one higher than 8) and a greater than 2 gap between second numbers. the 8600gt has double the amount of stream processors of the 9400gt - 32>16, double the texture processors - 16>8 and almost double the memory bandwith - 22.4>12.8. the only thing that would be a slight concern about the 8600gt would be the size of the ram on it, although i say slight because it would probably be quite rare for it to have a large negative effect on performance. most of the time the processing core would be overwhelmed before the ram would cause a performance destroying bottleneck; using your example Nintendo Maniac in crysis the ROPs wouldn't be able to handle tons of AA anyway.

anyway, just to show that i'm not talking out of my behind, proof: ASUS EN9400GT

Whoa, what? You do realize that list is a compilation of many people's insight over many years. In fact if you actually read it you'd see it's the FIFTH thread for that topic.

With that said, it's an ever improving and ongoing list, not someone's definitive opinion - so it IS possible for there to be wrong info. If you have disputes with the list, post on there yourself with proof - they'll be glad to correct it.

OpenGL plugin works in cards with OpenGL 2.1 (and follower versions of OpenGL). :D
