Ok, I'm looking at these two laptops, and would like some opinions on them. I would only really be using it for moderate gaming and the normal web surfing etc... not much video editing and hardware resource apps really but it should be able to handle it if that changes some. I know what the differences are, but is the $800 price diff worth it for the hp with quad core?

or

Buy the Asus G50Vt-X5-RF Refurbished Notebook PC at TigerDirect.ca

I can not tell how much (if any) dedicated memory the 9800gs has on the asus unit.

let me know what you guys think about these 2 laptops.
thanks

I recommend a lenovo, even though its not on your list. I personally dont like HP laptops at all, they look pretty stupid.

its heavy but if you want a 17.3 it is to be expected, its a C2Q but only 2.0Ghz, i think you would be better with a C2D 2.4Ghz or more, probably a lot cheaper too. I can find a lot of asus laptop close to 1000€ with C2D >=2.4Ghz + 9600gt or 4650 or 130.

You know what I'm going to say. :p

The Asus has 512MB GDDR3.
It comes with an utility called Direct Console which automatically overclocks your cpu easy and safe.

My model is the X1 with a P8400, for the X5 model they changed the Cpu to a P7450 which although a little slower consumes less power.

If you want something more powerful look for other options in that pricerange of 1,500 of the HP.
THERE ARE better alternatives, look around.

If your budget is tight, thank Asus and Gateway for bringing gaming laptops to affordable prices.

Ps: Check the link in my sig for pics of my laptop.
The X5 has yellowish gold marks instead of blue.

I suppose the only draw-back is the slightly smaller screen....not that big an issue though, assuming everyone does have at least a 17" CRT or something lying around at home for non-portable gaming.

Those are a full $250 and $600 pricier then the ones he mentioned, I'm not sure he'll be able to or be willing to spend that much.

I think my friend has the same laptop as Silenus (the G50VT-X1). It's a very nice laptop. I would imagine the X5 is a good one as well. I think he's only tried WoW on it so far (which it breezes through), I haven't had a chance to try something more strenuous on it yet.

After a few years experience with my "gaming laptop" at the time...neither. The idea of gaming on the go or somewhere other then my castle (aka, my room :p) was great at first, and that's what drove me to purchase a new, more performance laptop. Well, it was mainly for school too ;)

The big question is if you can really, emphasis really, see yourself gaming somewhere other then your comfort zone. Thought I could, and tried, but I can't anymore.

Not to mention that those monstrous Alienware gaming laptops with 17" screens are hardly portable and have crappy battery life.

you are right... the hp is more than I wanted to spend really.. and based on the comments in this thread amongst other reviews I think I'll go with the asus in the end as it is $900 less all said and done. the both qualify for the win 7 upgrade program, and I don't really need the extra 2 cores or larger screen.

I mainly want it for movies/games etc at the cottage, and the occasional game of wow over at the in-laws. it also must play ea's NHL games lol! any other will be a bonus and I'll probably not play much.
