I'm sure there heat distribution is about equal. The 5200 has significantly less transistors but on a larger process. The 5200 might produce less heat though if it it significantly lower clocked.
with the exception of the nvidia dustbuster, the trend is usually that a card that vastly outperforms another is usually the hotter card i think. so from these two, the 9600pro would be the hotter one.
9600's only requirte a small hewatsink and fan to operate correctly. Whilst they do need active cooling, they hardly put out a lot of heat, and making a choice between an fx5200 and a 9600 card because of that one reason is silly.
The ultimate editions from sapphire dont need active cooling either with that heatpipe on it. I agree with james though, it would be retarded to pass up the 9600 over the 5200 because of more heat.
