Hey! storyline is the most important thing. It makes the whole stuff interesting. Graphics come next then sound and yes the personality of the character you are controlling also matters a lot.

I hate to be the one who breaks the trend but I'm opting for gameplay. After all a game might have the best told story ever but if the gameplay is non existant then the drive to follow that story is deminished. I'd but story as a very close second.

Story, by far. Look at FF VI (or III in the US). Did it have good graphics? Not really. Good sound? Not really. Good plot? God yes. And it's one of the classic RPGs.
Actually, back in the 16 bit era, FF3 had some of the best graphics of it's time.. The sound in FF3 is also some of the best on the SNes.. And yes, it did have a great storyline too..

Without an interesting story, the game is just an empty shell.. No matter how good it looks..

Well, a good RPG encompases all of the listed qualities. It is a matter of priority:

My list order:
1. Gameplay
2. Story
3. Character
4. Replayability
5. Graphics
6. Game Length
7. Sound

(I'm sure someone disagrees with where I put the Graphics. Too bad:argue: )

My order would have to be:

Gameplay - I like ones which have a good battle system, where you have to think fast to determine the right move. Or maybe something strategic like Final Fantasy Tactics.

Story - it should have a good storyline, not one where you can guess what is going to happen next. It should not be linear either.

Game Length - the game should take at least 50 hours to complete minimum (not including side quests etc.)

Character - they should have varied attributes and you should have to swap them often to give a good mix between magic/physical attack/defending.

Sound - the sound should be good so you can annoy your neighbours, plus also be able to enjoy as a soundtrack when you are not playing the game.

Replayability - you should always be able to find new things you didn't spot before each time you replay the game.

Graphics - these are not important, the above list should be enough to make a great RPG.

Hmmm

RPG's are like a good book ya can't seem to put down.....
A good storyline keeps you coming back to find out what happens next....
Then comes gameplay...the storyline could be great..but we sure as hell don't want to go on boring battles....
Games that have been doing this for years..and a prime example...
The Dragonquest / Dragon Warrior series....crappy graphics...but damn are they good

Story and Gameplay.. If the story is good, it's like going through an awesome movie or a great book.. you just HAVE to play, so that you'll know what will happen next.. of course the other facets mentioned matter just as well ..

The story of course....what would be a RPG game without it.....
What makes a RPG game different from the others is, u being in the control of a character that participate in a storyline that include all the other importants parts..like u said: Gameplay,Game lenght, Caracters, Graphics, Sound....
