A while back there were gaming editors bemoaning some games not getting purchased that were "must haves" like Prince of Persia and Beyond Good and Evil. I recently purchased Beyond Good and Evil and have had Prince of Persia for a while.
Neither game really struck me as "must have" but I'm curious as to what makes gamers purchase one game and not another? For me, the plot behind Beyond Good and Evil didn't sound exciting, I'll admit I like the game, but I can't see why it'd get rave reviews...

So what were/are some must have games, and what makes a game "must have?"

I'll post a few "must have" games, IMSHO tomorrow... 'er tonight...

As with most things it is pretty much individual tastes. Per editors and the like ..one of the must have game recently was Halo 2. It took about a year and a half for us to get into Halo. We purchased Halo 2 while we were still in the "Halo-ness", but to us it was not a "must have". (Don't get us wrong..we are still enjoying the game) We are not an avid FPS fan.

At the same time were are salivating over Nippon Ichi's latest PS2 Strag release. To us this is a "must have"...To everyone else your probably saying Nippon who?

As DW said, depends on the person. I for one am a RPG collector and so hensforth anything that does not come stateside is at best "must have" for me if I can. Since I am here in Japan I am just controlling myself not to go overspending on a lot of stuff :p

Discounting personal preference, the history and peer evaluation affects "must-have" tendencies a lot. FF used to be a must-have due to its history. Heck... Metal Gear is still a must have for me anytime, except Acid perhaps. Prince of Persia was OK, and it sucked me in with the "revived and reinvented old game" thing. It was OK, but nowhere near the "must-have" quality of MG.

I dunno about what makes a game a 'must have' to me. Certain games are simply brilliant, others I get bored of. And perhaps I'm missing out on a lot of gaming hype, or I'm completely numb to any kind of outside info about games, but last couple of years hardly any game made me want to buy it. The last 'must have' was Baldr Force Exe for DC which was released last year in October.

I only dive for two things -- the quirky and the masterful. Examples -- Katamari Damacy=Quirky (Got it before all the iPod Chic Geeks did!) and Phantom Brave=Masterful. I've bought games out of sheer fandom before, though, and didn't look back -- that would be Final Fantasy X and Contra: Shattered Soldier [I'm weak!!!][on second thought, they were good games anyway]. I bought Ninja Gaiden because I beleive that it's the pinnacle of the action genre -- insanely challenging and deeply rewarding (if only for psycological reasons). I also spend my time downloading obscure 2D Japanese shooters, mostly freeware, if that gives you any idea of my gaming tastes.

The upcoming Shadow of the Colossus is a msut have for me for two reasons. I loved the developers first game. And it's not a common type of game, unique visual style, unique gameplay. Quirky game I ugess you could lump that into.

While Zelda Twilight Princess isn't a must have game for me for one reason. It's Zelda and I still have yet to see anything in this game that doesn't look like I've done it before (until that happens I dont even plan on buying the game until its good adn cheap).

Basically if its a new franchise, that looks intriguing I'm gonna be all over it. If it's a rehashed franchise it takes a whole lot for me to get to love it. Unelss its something that shares a name but nothing else in common (like MegaTen Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga. Or Final Fantasy). No reason to buy a game because you must have it when it first comes out unless it's something fresh and new to me. That changes for everyone though I guess.

Well..I buy everything...literally.If it's dropped to a decent price i'll pick it up. Why cause I collect games. It's what I like to do as my hobby.

As for "Must Haves" meaning for me to buy or pre-order at that 50dollar price tag. It's got to be either part of a favorite series of mine or a game with a nice twist to it. (Ex. "Shadow of the Colosus", "Call of the Cluthu")

Well, I tend to just buy stuff I have a good fealing about. I also tend to like most kinds of games (except anything fishing or just plain weird related). The company also has a lot to do with what I buy. If Microsoft releases a RTS game, I will likely (eventually) buy it, espically when they pay me to beta test *cough* highly hyped RTS game *cough*, that also helps in my decision, hehe. :)

I think reputation/fame and price play a huge part as well. I've never seen Morrowind in action but I did hear a lot of good things about it. Two days ago (like said in another thread) I saw it for only 7 euros and that really seemed like a big time bargain!

For me its really word of mouth combined with my initial impressions from the game, I usually learn a little about a game before I by it and read a few reviews. A "must have" game for me is any game I know is fun or think would be fun.
