What do modchips do?

I guess the title pretty much says it all: "What do modchips do?" If you need me to specify a system, let's say in a PS2. How are they beneficial? Thanks.

easy they allow you to play burned games and even other region games from japan and what not.
It also allows you play backups and emulators that are made for the system. Also it can allow you to use software likePS2 Reality Media Player to play video formats like divx.
i reccomend you edit and remove that link before you get warned/banned. you should know better. at least if you read the rules ;)
some good ones even let u use a huge (250 + gig) custom harddrive to store saves (like an official sony one, letting u use the HD like a huge mem card that u can save to and load to from a game) and games (the games themselves run off the HD, making them load faster than xbox ;) ). Needless to say u can also store mp3s, movies, and other apps thru a HD.
Yeah you can use harddrives for you ps2. For awhile they had HDloader which let you boot games off a harddrive but got shutdown for using part of Sony codes or something. Yet HDadvance exact replica of hdloader is being sold in place of it. But i ever heard Hard Drive acting as a huge memory card.

But the Xbox modchip one can do everything was D.D. is saying.
Not all modchips are evil... some of them are specifically designed to allow your consoles to play import games only. People just put them to bad use but that's another story...

the official sony one does this. some modchips (dunno if i shud name them all but i will say that two of the most popular ones starts with an M and ends with an H and the other one starts with a D and ends with a Z and has only 3 letters, followed by an integer that equals the number of alpha letters in its name >.< ) allow this with ANY harddrive thru ATAP patching. this also enables games that use the HD (official) to cache, download maps, etc onto the HD (ie socom). These modchips also offer the capability of HDloader/Advance built in.

You know that is a pretty big hint and the idea of being subtle just went out the door hehe. But yes, it is great having one and using it for more than just playing PS2 games. Another benefit these advance chips offer is the ability to make the PS2 act as an FTP server, and so I am able to have a secondary backup of my mem card saves to the PC as well as the official Sony HDD (you never know what could happen).
just to remind you: dont try to play divx movies on your sony.. it will **** it up completly

AFAIK, Sonys PS2 recognize only about 139 GB on your hard drive, no matter how bigger it is than those 139 GB ...

134 GB I think, in fact, but the latest version of HDAdvance (from 2.0 and up) lets you use up to 200 GB in size.

HDLoader was discontinued because it said it was supported by Sony, which it wasn't, and Sony didn't like it, HDAdvance is made by the same guys, but this time, no copyrights.

The PS2 HD can only be used as a memcard with games that support this feature.

As for reading divx, yeah, ArchIBald is right, don't do it, it will just kill your lens.

thx for correction, as for saving to hdd, aren't there any tools to move those saves from MM to HDD? I think I heard sth about that... but I'm not sure
AFAIK, no, I've searched for such an app, and the only thing I found is a tool to backup your save on your PC through the LAN.
what about the USB to USB Connection? is 'normal' cable enough (with proper software of course :) )?

The only one I can recall that can do that was using the Sharkport, which is now discontinued. The only method as I mentioned before is by FTP through the NIC adapter. HDLoader also can support larger HDD, you just need to patch it, they even fixed the date stamping problems. Heck I even compressed it even more and changed the way the logos are in boot up, now it looks like it is an "official" Sony product .
What about PS2OS?? :eek:nthepull
You could use that, I have not tried it personally since I have a simple setup using another launcher. Maybe when it past its Alpha stages I will consider using it later on when it reaches Beta or Final stages.

i have an official sony hdd and you can manually transfer saves between the hdd and the memcards through the browser.

you need a pl230x cable. if you try to connect the ps2 to your pc with a regular usb cable you risk shorting something. the sharkport, as toshiro mentioned, is such a cable.
thx Bgnome

Toshiro AFAIK lates release of PS2OS is last alpha version :thumb:
