I'm planing to study abroad. (US, UK, or AU not decide yet) My friends told me I need a laptop for studying. In my country, students rarely use laptop except those who major in computing or ones who wanna show off their stuffs. I want to know is laptop necessary for studying in university?

i honestly have never been in a position where i'd need a laptop. i can take hand notes in all my classes just fine.

when i was a sophomore in high school, they gave us laptops. all we did was watch porn and play Counter-Strike.

in short, i dont think how laptops are necessary. i use my desktop computer in my house and that's where i do all my work.

Its not necissary but I love having my ibook for all my classes, makes taking notes easier, and if the Professor allows it I can record his lecture to listen to later. Depending on your course of study it might or might not be necissary, but it does come in handy.

Oh and it adds a +2 to your charisma score ;)

Well it is necessary in some way like paperworks, projects and the likes if you don't have a PC in the place your gonna stay... it is much better than doing these kind of work in the school (but you have limited time) and in internet/computer shop (which will cost you)

well you don't necessary need a laptop to write down your lecture (a notebook can do) unless it is allowed in the class

also, having a laptop will be your music and gaming station when your bored in your room...

Laptop has many usage but its up to you if your gonna shell out some cash for it... and don't get it lost or robbed ;)

im actually saving up for a laptop now, got my first job at the beginning of september. Im not sure what kind of laptop im gonna get, or just how much laptops differ from desktops but... im definately gonna need one for college when i start graphic design. Im gonna need to be able to access a computer at any given time then and i have to share my desktop with a few family members, so id rather have a more personal computer. Im gonna have to do some research on laptops in a couple months though

I use my laptop all the time for school. It saves me a lot of space (ie. I don't have to have a big ass binder or two for my classes, I just take notes on my laptop). Also, I don't have to worry about saving my work to a floppy disk or email my work to myself if I were to use the school PCs since I save everything on my laptop and it's all organized. If I had to use floppies/email, I'd never organize my stuff.

Strider: If you're gonna need a laptop for graphic design, you're probably gonna have to shell out a lot of cash so you get a pretty powerful system with a good graphics chip. My guess is that it'll cost you anywhere from $2-3,000 CAN. But that kind of laptop could easily outperform many desktops that are out (make sure you take a look at a few Centrino systems tho, they rock on battery life and performance :D)

a laptop in my opinion is not necessary and so far ive gone thru one year of engineering and cud honestly say that only one course wudnt have been less efficient if i had taken a laptop to take notes : com sci, and even then its debatable. the problem is many courses (at least the ones i took) make extensive use of diagrams and pictures and whatnot (ie. civ).

if ur planning to buy a computer for note taking purposes, i wud suggest getting a tablet pc ...
