With the recent wave of virus/worm attacks, I've been thinking about replacing my old McAfee scanner; it's been getting a bit old, and the scan engine's prolly outdated by now.

So what Virus scanner do you think i should get? Do you think i should stay with McAfee and just get a newer, or are there better scanners in the market?

Thanks for any input on this. :)

You got that right..... the LiveUpdate service is only free for a year, after that you gotta subscribe to it.

And as for protection against computer virus, nothing beats the wisdom and knowledge of the computer user..... no matter how good an antivirus software there is, ultimately it will still depend on the user making smart choices.

If you get Norton, don't just get the Anti-Virus, get SistemWorks. It's kept my computer crash-free for a year and a half now! Except when I play ePSXe :p :heh:.

I use norton antivirus 2000. This is because this is the last version where the virus definations are free. Liveupdate in this version was not free however. You have to update them defs by d/l smart update from www.symantec.com/sarc .

From 2001 onwards NAV has a timer which lasts a year.

Ps it does work. So far it has stopped my machines from getting approx 5 or so viruses in the past 3 years. What really annoys me is ppl who do not update the defs ever then blame the software when they catch one.

Well, I did have the most recent version of LifeUpdate, but the Trojan Horse somehow managed to get around that. As a matter of fact, I found out about the virus after I saw this weird program file that kept on changing. I ran about 5 virus scans and nothing happend. Iit was only after I got McAfee that it told me I had Trojan Horse. Well, guess now I have two virus scanners :D

Well daft as it is it is true that NAV will refuse to install any defs if the main executable has been infected. Probably this is what happened. I know that smartupdate gives you a warning message in such instances. Dunno about lveupdate . Never really used it.

Ps To set the record straight I wasn't implying youself with that statement rather a twat who I built a machine for who had the gall to ask for a refund 'cos he infected his own machine after opening an attachment with a very sleezy title. What a prick!

Hey, my boss just warned me about a virus that deletes sector 1 of your HD, then infects other computers on the network. The message is, "You won a Virtual Card," or something to that effect. Careful . . .
