In Valkyrie Profile, the game gets stuck on the black message screen which says 'Vilnore was about a week's journey away along the great road'. This is a little while after the game starts. The sound however, works fine. Only the game gets stuck in the message screen and doesn't go anywhere from there.

I have experienced exactly like that too

did you use ePSXe's ISO load function?
try to mount the ISO on either Alcohol 120% or Daemon as virtual CD, then edit the cdrom config at the emu to point to the virtual drive, then try to "run CD-ROM"

Are you using save states?

I don't think save states have any responsibilities in this problem...

You'd be surprised.

Save states can prevent Valkyrie profile from continuing past a Dialogue section completely.

actually this section is right at the beginning of the game, so I presume he's not using Save States
I have experienced it too..right after that dialog, the game freezes (although music is still playing) and there's nothing you can do about it

I tried the method I mentioned earlier and hey...it works

that problem triggered by audio sync & save state problem, try use different spu plugin + never use save state + use default fps (never set above default)
trust me i've already finish this game 5x times with epsxe
