Sony also laid out the technical specs of the device. The PlayStation 3 will feature the much-vaunted Cell processor, which will run at 3.2 Ghz and feature 2.18 teraflops of performance. It will sport 256mb XDR main RAM at 3.2 Ghz, have 256MB of GDDR VRAM at 700mhz, a detachable 2.5 inch HDD slot, six usb 2.0 ports, Memory Stick Duo, a SD slot, a compact flash memory slot, Compact flash slot, 2 hdmi outputs, 1 av multi out, 1 SPDIF optical output, and 1-gigabit Ethernet built in port
It seems the PS3 edges out the Xbox 360 in terms of specs.

no way the xbox 360 edges out the ps3 in terms of specs by a long shot. the xbox 360 has 3 3.2ghz processors and a proprietary ati chip with 48 pipelines. now although its only functioning at 1 teraflop i think its proprietary video card will give it a big edge.

The Cell Processor has 9 cores, and we don't know very much about the nvidia chip so please don't say anything like that yet. We have no idea what the true specs are and the true performance. Even the X360's specs aren't set in stone.

I know what you meant, but still think it's pretty funny (I think you meant it beats the ps3 by a lot... not edges out).

Anyways, Xbox does have a whole unified architecture thing going on (unified graphics pipelines, unified memory)... so is it more flexible? don't ask me, I don't know hardware for the life of me.

The ps3 may be powerful, but it will probably be extremely hard to program for.
Unlikely as this time it uses a main programming language similar to C++ (instead of an ASM system like PS2) and graphic APIs from NVIDIA feature sets. Like OpenGL 2.0+ and NVIDIA CG (C for graphics)

My guess is multiplatform games will use OpenGL (All three big consoles will support it) and exclusive tittles will use NVIDIA CG as that is reported to be the best way to get the most out of the PS3 graphics chip.

And Sony has some time on hand to tweak around with the hardware, as the system wont be coming out until mid-2006. Backwards compatibilty is always a plus less clutter next to the TV. :thumb:

hehe i found some pics of the system. Dont know if these are legit or not.

To show off the PlayStation 3's graphical brawn, Sony showed several game demos, including an Unreal 3 tech demo of what appeared to be Unreal Tournament 2007. In what must come as a relief to developers, Epic Games' Tim Sweeney was on hand to vouch for the PS3, saying it was "easy to program for" and that Epic had received its first PS3 hardware two months ago. He proved the tech demo was real time by showing it again and by manipulating the camera and zooming in.

I guess the programming issue won't be the case.
