I picked up Star Ocean 2nd Story this weekend and just tried playing it using epsxe, but received less than desirable results. So far Im getting choppy sound, a half blank main screen, a blank screen when attempting to save, small freezes that occur seemingly randomly but stop after a second or two, and for some reason characters images stretch out and look really weird but then when I get right up next to them they revert to looking normal. Im sure its just a problem with my configuration , so any advice is welcomed. Thanks

well, thers one problem lol. Actually epsxe runs mostly on your cpu speed. How much u got?

Also, turn frame skipping on. For characters stretching, it only happens to me when i use psx emulation cheater's infinite skill points cheat. So if u using that, turn it off.

Not really....
Toning down Framebuffer Access (to 2) , Texture (to 0), Off-Screen Drawing (to 2) and Filtering might solve your problem.

Forget about Frame-skipping. Used only on slower (very slow!!) computers and SHOULD not be used.

  • Star Ocean 2 is buggy, especialy on emus. There are known issues on the console itself, like issues with the personal action stuff, and making things. I'd suggest that your save error is just one of the many issues which plague this game
  • The glitchy sprites I think is an issues with the way the emu handles what is passed to it as I got the error in PEOPs too
  • Yuor slowdowns are likely CD reading errors (CD seek on a PC for some reason isn't fast enough), in which case I'd suggest running from an ISO. Alternatively they could be frameskipping giving you gyp.

Strange... I've never had problems with Star Ocean 2. (Other than the actual glitches related to Personal Actions) I've always used Pete's Software plugin though. Maybe try that instead of using Pete's OGL plugin.

Yeah, I never really had problem with it either, the first run through was with petes software plugin, the second run through was with ogl 2, and that made a HUGE difference.

Ive tried what all you guys said. So far it has made a little bit of a difference. The save screen is ok now, but the main screen when first starting the game is still not alright. The characters being screwey is also better. I havent yet played the game for more than an hour or so so Ive yet to experience any problems with other parts, though Im expecting them at this point. I guess if I want the full star ocean experience I cant do it through emulation like usual, which isnt a huge problem as the semester is about to end so Ill be home with my ps2 to enjoy the game later in the month. Thanks anyway though

Im playing it with filtering 0 and hires textures 0 and I'm not seeing sprite glitchiness.
The main menu screen is weird, true. But how much time do you spend on it, anyway?
The rest of the game runs fine, by the way.
