DMA stands for Direct Memory Access. Basically, it allows your drive to communicate with memory directly, rather than sending everything through the CPU. Try ripping the DVD to your hard drive and playing the VOBs directly. That should signifigantly improve performance since the DVD drive can be a major bottleneck.

VOBs are the files on your DVD disc that actually contain the video. You can't copy them directly off your DVD due to encryption, so you'll need a DVD ripping utility. I don't think I'm allowed to post links to that kinda stuff here, but do a search for "DVD ripping software" in google and you should get all you need. After that, you can use software such as Media Player Classic to play the files.
