Agreed. PS2 games are still being actively developed by a few companies and many retail outlets still sell brand-new copies. If Sony can pull off software BC (and do it properly) there will be one more incentive to move up to a PS3. The PS3's upscaler for PS2 games looks really nice on all of the PS2 games that I've played on my PS3. I get hi-res graphics with better compatibility than PCSX2.

Are you basing your experience off of the original 60gb ps3?

okay sorry about that. I wonder how the newer much much more software based emulating ps3s compare to pcsx2 at the moment.

Doesn't the hardware-based PS2 'emulation' just scale everything up? I.e.: Not a real improvement.

640x480 at 720p is still 640x480... scaled to 720p.
yup. All HDTVs have scalers as well, but lower end models probably don't compare to the ps3 upscalers.

just found this ign article on ps3 upscaling.
http://media.ps3.ign.com/articles/793/793775/imgs_1.html

It seems to really help with reducing the aliasing. I could see the big benefit with it on large hdtvs

To me the the comparison between ps3 upscaling and pcsx2 is pretty close to the comparison between bluray and 1080p upscaling of DVDs. So PCSX2 is much better looking.

I hate it when sites try and compare 2 pictures to each other by doing a screen cap and then putting the images "side by side". If one side is a screen cap @ 480i and the other is @ 1080p, then one of these pics was resized and doing so will introduce artifacts and bluriness (depending on the resize filter used). Who's to say that they only took a screen cap from the games as run on the PS2 and put a PhotoShop layer of half of the pic, adjusted the color a bit, and added some mild gaussian blurring? If they wanted an authentic comparison, both pics would have to be shown at 1:1.
Yeah your right, and I originally was going back and forth between posting/notposting the 1:1 res images (cuz i knew this would be said (and you are accurate in your complaint)) but had to make a quick last minute decision cuz i had someone shouting at me to get off the net and get something done, so quickly decided not to because it would mess up the page format of those who had <1200 resolution. 1:1 photos are however directly linked in the hotlink in that very post as a compromise.
