Old one just won't work now, and I am on the prowl for a cost effective system. Here is what I am thinking in terms of components and I would value the input of others regarding my choices (all prices $AUD)

CPU - Core i5 750 ($259)
Videocard - ATI Radeon HD 4890 1GB ($249)
Mainboard - Gigabyte GA-P55-UD3R P55 DDR3 ATX motherboard ($185)
RAM - Team Xtreem 4GB PC3 12800 1.6GHz ($72)
HDD - simple 320 or 500gb
Case - Thermaltake Armor case ($62)
PSU - whatever would do the job
Optical - whatever would do the job, no blu-ray

Monitor - not needed
Keyboard/Mouse - not needed

I really haven't been paying attention to any PC components for a good while now so I really don't have a great deal of knowledge at the moment. I'm still a bit blase about spending a great deal of money, but these components seemed to be rather reasonable price wise and seem (well from what I can see) would give me a bit of decent performance, so I would think that counts for something.

I would greatly appreciate any input you good chums would have on this matter.

The 5 series is unveiled tomorrow and shipped around the 16-18th so the 4890 price should drop

Hey snicko, I wonder how much 1TB drives are for you aussies.

I know I can get a 1TB HDD on sale for $80 here, which isn't much more expensive than the 640GB HDDs - which aren't that much more expensive than the 500 or 320GB drives.

Checking pricespy I could get one for $89.

Might just do that.

I would just wait for the 5 series and get one of those for the DX11 support.
i wouldn't.

first revs of new gens really suck.

be careful what you look for Snicko, that samsung drive is only 5400rpm, it has high seek times.

For the DVD drive, it doesn't really matter too much, just try to avoid the really cheap ones (The $20USD ones..), as they tend to wear out quickly.
Most DVD/CD combo burners cost ~$20 OEM and ~$30 retail, at least last I looked at them at Newegg (which was when I was building my PC two years ago, and despite the lengthy time between, I doubt the world of optical drives has changed much save maybe Blu-Ray getting a bit better/cheaper).

They're shipped around 16-18th like Kaizen said. They probably might suck like Squall said though.

give the design time to mature imo.

I see, sorry I missed that Kaizen, I might miss these DX11 cards, mainly from a cost to performance point of view, but if they release one of the cards for around $300 and it performs remarkably then perhaps I will get one. But I doubt any new card would cost $300AUD. As for the HDD, well it doesn't really bother me all that much, but I don't really have a need for a high capacity drive so I will pay more attention when it comes time for purchasing and may stick with a cheaper 500gb one.

Caviar Blue (which i can't find any of) or Caviar Black are the best HDD to go for.

It's speculation until tomorrow night but ATI themselves displayed a midrange card from the 5 series and claimed it was as fast as the 4890 with half the power consumption

Should be cooler too ...probably. Who knows, the thermal density for the 4 series was nuts

I'm guessing you don't plan on OCing this since you didn't mention the need for an aftermarket cooler. Why not get a cheap $30 cooler and get some more performance out of it?

PSU-wise, Corsair 650W non-modular (costs $108 here, but it should be a lot less in other places, besides, no cutting cheap on the PSU as everyone says)
Welcome to Corsair :: TX Power Supply Product Information

52A on +12V rail should be pretty comfortable even for an HD4890.
