I've decided to work on my old cd-block core (based on Fabien's work), and I'm really happy with the results !
I only tested a few games, but I can say for sure that the compatibility has really improved : Radiant Silvergun, Puzzle Bobble 2, Pocket Fighters etc ... are playable, Panzer Dragoon Saga and Guardian Heroes go to the title screen.
Speed is still an issue, but hey, one thing after another
