[RUMOR] PS2 and DC on PS3.

PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility could be returning to the PlayStation 3, according to what appears to be an internal document accidentally leaked by Sega of America, one that hints at downloadable previous gen games available on a case-by-case basis.

That document, uncovered by French gaming web site Objectif-Sega, notes that "SCEA wants to sell all PS2 titles on PSN," which may indicate a strategy similar to the one Sony has taken with original PlayStation games, released as "PSone Classics."...

The notes mention two titles, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and an unspecified Sonic the Hedgehog game—there are seven Sonic-starring games for the PS2—as examples of candidates for release.

The same document also mentions what appears to be downloadable Dreamcast titles for the PlayStation Network. Those titles don't appear to be exclusive to the PlayStation 3, however, as the rumored meeting notes read "If we provide a list of DC titles SCEA will let us know which ones they're interested in having exclusively."

This is actually unconfirmed by Sony and Sega.

But the Ps2 downloads really makes sense, at least to them, I expect a new firmware with bc support. 4.0 anyone.

Now about dreamcast games....

I think, there are two options of doing it, emulating and porting.

Now which would you think they would use?

Would like to hear Cid's opinion on this. :D

So what's the reason NOT to get the ps3 slim now?

Another bit of the info.

There will be an "Import Store", by speculation it would mean some DC titles that never made it to the west.

If that's true, it will be more than awesome..thanks.
Forgive me, but I'm not paying again for PS2 games, let alone from a select group of PS2 games, and do you realize how much hard drive space they'll eat up?

I own a lot of PS2 games and I don't see the reason why I can't just use the DVDs, other than Sony's greed!
Forgive me, but I'm not paying again for PS2 games,
I would re-buy some games if they ported and upscaled them
Upscaled PS2 games downloaded to a hard drive would eat an 80 gyg hard drive quickly!

BTW, sorry about the mistake on the PS2 emulating Dreamcast, maybe a PS3 with all of its power could do that, I was thinking of homebrew and how it was locked to a 1.8 GHZ setup and mentioned the PS2 specs by mistake...OOPS!
For guys like Cid this might make the difference, but for most I don't think the nostalgia factor would come into play.

Well that's becoming a common practice nowadays.
I assume you have a couple n64 and maybe snes carts around, why would you pay for them again.

I can't see the PS2 emulating the Dreamcast, a 200 MHZ system with completely different hardware isn't going to do a good job emulating a Dreamcast!
What are you talking about, it's the PS3 emulating the dreamcast not PS2.
Sorry didn't see your updated post. Slow connection.
If you could use your PS2 games, the Dreamcast games were cheap, and it happened a year ago, it might have got my interest...

I edited that statement out as I realized my mistake about the PS3 emulating the Dreamcast.

It all boils down to price, I have purchased a few Super NES games on the Wii for ~$8, Secret of Mana / Zelda: A Link to the Past, but it's only the best games and ones I will play a lot.

Aren't PS2 DVDs around ~4.5 GB? That eats up hard drive space quickly...Plus consoles aren't supposed to need a lot of hard drive space, whereas PCs can have terrabyte + drives in them, and more than 1...

If push came to shove:
SEAGATE 500GB Momentus 5400.6 SATA 2.5in HDD w/ 8MB Cache at Memory Express Computers

Wonder how much MS would charge for a 500GB proprietary 360 HD. ;)
thats why it has 160 now :p

ie, thats why the ps3 hdd is replaceable :p
This would spike my interest for a ps3 by a lot, like A LOT.

Project Justice online
Paratech, you wouldn't happen to know that an upgrade for the PS3 HDD is as easy as buying a new HDD for your laptop, would you? It's not proprietary. And the PS3 Slim comes with 160GB already so you'll be able to fit roughly 40 PS2 games in there if anything. A normal 80GB should also be able to accommodate roughly 20 or so. Most PS2 games don't go up to 4GB, and that's the point (same thing with PSP games not reaching over 1GB like most people would think).

PS2 emulation... I can see coming. Especially with a new nice feature in the debug firmware that Sony has been concealing for a while but eh.. :p

DC emulation... now that's unexpected... I'd think they are more like ports than emulation. Then again, this basically suggests that Sega is revamping their old games for the next-gen consoles (note the part that says it's not exclusive to PS3) so it might come to 360 as well. We'll see. :)
well if mars matrix and ikuraga (sp?) and some other games, which i cant be bothered to mention here, get ported then im all for it.

Your probably right, but DC emulation would be kinda cool. After all from experience with ps2 emulation on the computer and studying its architecture, we know that DC emulation is less hardware demanding.
With another ****ty PC gaming experience tonight (yeah, bought GRID, crashes after the splash screen on my PC, runs fine on my GF's.....) I'm really considering giving up hope for PC gaming fully, or at least paid PC gaming, as it's a dud nowadays. The few games worth playing don't run due to bugs or whatever.

My DC is due for replacement, even though usually when I write this on forums it starts to work again the other night. Anyway, I'm all for this plan. Hopefully they'll bring life into Shenmue 1 and 2, creating demand for Shenmue 3 ;) I'm still waiting.
i know its a pain to ask this, but is it actually physically possible ,without some madman/genus, for them to emulate the DC on ps3?

That would be awesome.

By the way, I remember some crashing issues with GRID. Something related to the protection used, a new file from SecuROM? fixed it. It was on the official support forum if I remember correctly.
Thanks for the suggestion KrossX, I already came across that one as well, and it didn't work, unfortunately.
By the way, I remember some crashing issues with GRID.
Probably just driver problems. Hahaha, hohoho. I so punny.

Speaking of GRID though, how's the gameplay? Super simulation realistic, or arcade? Or somewhere in between?
Hahahaha, 'twas good. XD
Somewhere in between. Analog controller is a must though.

But let's not get off-topic, DC revival! Awesome! :x3:
