In this case it looks better without a border to me.

Oh, and one other thing: you've been using a few different fonts, which doesn't give me the impression of a coherent design. Perhaps you should stick to one or two fonts; one for the Dxbx letters, launch button (and if I'm not mistaken, the XISO icon where using the same font?), and another font for the GUI texts (game title, etc).

Also, please consider that a button needs to be delivered in two states at least : up & down (and maybe even a highlighted/hoover version). Implementation-wise, it's much easier to use a standard button for "launch", with just the font of the Dxbx letters and a good foregrouind+background color applied.

The layout is fine by me, I just worry a bit where to put the filtering controls when looking at the total game-collection; NDSCRC uses a 'have' checkbox, and a few edits&dropdowns, but that still feels limited, as it doesn't filter on all available data.

As Patrick haven't said anything about the backdrop, I'll consider only Shadow's post.

Here is the backdrop image for the Dxbx Main GUI and for the window 'About' (with the DXBX layer separated). Inside the zip file of the main GUI there is also a preview of the launch button (SWF file). :thumb:

See if I have done it right! ;)

Hi Joao, I've been rather busy with actual emulation code, but I've seen your artwork - now to find the time to integrate it all ;)
Thanks so far! Is it alright if I contact you again if anything graphics-related comes up?

Of course you can contact me, no problem!! :)

Thanks for your appreciation on my work, this motivation has been really important! :thumb:

It was a pleasure to help the Dxbx project. So... next step: WEBSITE!!

Just changing the subject: did you look at the Project64 source to have any idea of how to add the pause function? I looked and I found this function that pauses the CPU. It's located in the "Cpu.c" file... so, if you understand the C code, you can have some ideas of how to add it in Dxbx! If this suggestion didn't help... sorry, but I tried! :dead:

Preview of new Dxbx GUI

Okay, Joao, I've been working on a new GUI for Dxbx, here's a Work-In-Progress preview (faking a lot, but looking nice already).

It's getting really good. Congratulations! I'm anxious to see the final version! I think it would be better if the Dxbx header was moved up a bit, staying at the center, between the menu bar (File, Edit, View, Settings, ...) and the "detail tabs" (Title, Region, Version, ...). But it's looking good!

I agree - I cut up the image in three parts, so when resizing the GUI, I can now center the DXBX letters while keeping the xbox images left & right aligned.

As for the pause - that's already in the code (as Cxbx has it too), we just haven't surfaced it in a menu-option yet.

Yes I can... but I think it's already developed enough... but I can add some effects... This is really good, congratulations tabai! :) Just a curiosity... did you make a course to know how to use photoshop?

I'm still impressed with the creativity  All my creativity went away after the design of the circuit board, this was really helpful!

Here is the image made by the Dxbx Design Team (tabai + JoaoHadouken)

PS: I think it would be better without the exclamation mark at "PLAY!", don't you think? But this is detail... not really important...

I really don't like it to glow that much, but I think that's just how I like stuff. What do you think Patrick? Also I added some details.

@tabai :
The button-bar below looks nice, but where do I put the filtering controls then? Also, the 4th button has no dialog behind it yet. I was even considering to integrate all config into one dialog, a bit something like this. I do like the color of your square buttons better than the color of the Play button (perhaps the Dxbx header logo could use a touch of that sort of green too?)

The green 'grating' background on the right is a nice touch, if we use it, it should be a repeating pattern, so that it shows more when the window is enlarged (for this, the info-pane should resize itself to it's contents of course).

The green lines in the grid are a a bit complicated to draw, as i'm using a standard grid control - I haven't done much customization to those yet, so I don't know if it's complicated to do or not.

The rounded corners around the game-icon will hide a few pixels of the icon, and I don't know if that's wise. Some icons have pretty weird color combinations, so using a margin around it is not an option either.
As I see it now, there are three layers involved : The green grated background, the icon itself and the border around it. It might be possible to change the order of the layers, so that the icon is on top when it has 'non-background' pixels in the corners, but I suspect that is a lot of work for just a few pixels. So either make it a square, or place the icon at the top layer.

Another thing that I haven't figured out yet, is how to differentiate between the list of titles itself (read from the XBE dumps, or a gamebase.xml file) and a 'have' list - showing all xbe/iso's that are present on the users system. Talking about this with Shadow_tj gave me the idea that maybe we should split the list in categories, so we can have games, applications and demos in separate tabs. But I don't know for sure yet.
One difference is the source of the details - the 'have' list will probably read the title, icon and other details straight from the XBE/ISO, while the titles list/database has no XBE to read from, so it can only use what's available in the dump-files (so for now we can't show an icon, untill we re-dump everything to include the icon).
Maybe we should have a "no icon available" icon too (and a few region-images perhaps, like in Joao's screenshots).

Oh, and where did Copyright icon and TitleID go?

Hi there tabai,

I think the buttons would be better with the Vista style:

I think also the config button has to have some icon, I have put a gear... Here is the link of the image, in case you want it! :thumb:

I didn't like much the solid color of the DXBX text, I think it might be better with a gradient... see my attached images for having some ideas... ;)
