Hey My friends computer needs some new ram. right now hes got 2x128mb RDRAM. I wanted to upgrade it to 512 (hes not much of a gamer but it really needs it) and the problem is that its hard to find the ram for cheap. So i was gonna take out the ram and install 2x512mb DDR 4200 ram. I was wondering if i could do that, and not need to buy a new motherboard to work with the new sticks. thanks

You can't use DDR2 on a DDR motherboard. I'd advise you to get this:

you know if his computer is really that crappy, he could probably buy a whole new one for under 400$ at least you can in my area. Toronto canada.

edit: 200$ was a bit low but for 400 you could get one better than his current. though it wont be any gaming machine, pure word processing and net.

No, it won't. RDRAM is MUCH different than DDR. They are not compatible with each other. Two sticks of 128 MB PC800 RDRAM (Rambus memory must be installed in pairs) will cost about $90 or so on Newegg, and two sticks of 256 MB will cost close to $200.

It would be foolish to buy RDRAM now. It is completely outdated and overpriced. Selling RDRAM, however, is a good idea, as you may get a fairly good price for it.

I think what eveyone is trying to say here is that he computer is so outdated that it is not worth buying new ram. Your friend should just put that money towards a new computer.

ok ill spell it out even more than mg2 did because obviously you cant take a hint.

DDR RAM doesnt work in an RDRAM slot. simple as that. it's like trying to put your USB mouse in a DVI slot. it's totally and utterly incompatible.
