Non Removable PSP Go! Battery Will Eliminate Piracy
Says Sony

One of the reasons for the PlayStation Portable not doing as well as it could against the Nintendo DS was the fact that piracy drove away some of the developers from creating videogames for the platform.

Sony seems to be catching up with the PSP Go! and one of the steps that it has taken to reduce piracy has been to make the battery of the new device irremovable by any normal means. This basically means that the handheld will not be hackable but also that those who use it will need to ship it to Sony for the battery to be replaced once it starts to die out.

John Koller, who has worked at Sony on the PSP Go!, said that “We've had a lot of success with the 3000. While the earlier models of the PSP were incredibly easy to use with ripped or downloaded games, the PSP Go is going to make things tougher on the pirates. You won't be able to rip your games and play them on the system, the firmware precludes that. There's no external battery, so there's a number of protections put into place on the system.”

The PlayStation Portable Go! is set to be launched on October 1 and is quite a significant departure for Sony. The new device does not have the UMD drive, which means that all the applications and all the videogames, which a user might need to download from a new special section of the PlayStation Network.

The fact that titles have to be downloaded and cannot be exported from the device also serves as a deterrent to piracy. Intrepid and mischief bound users will probably find a way to hack into the PSP Go! at some point but if the overall public cannot easily grasp the process needed, Sony will likely consider the new handheld a success and will attract new developers to it.
The source.

The fact the PSP go is a "download-only" platform is not enough...Now you will handle the first IPOD PSP!

Oh and by the way, the PSP Go is very well liked in Holland....I smell the PSP go! will be rebranded PSP gtfo!

FUCΚ THAT!

The only reason the PSP original failed was because of the lock downs and how you paid the same price for a lesser version of the same game/movie... it just never made any sense. I hope Sony gets raped on this one...

Nedgame? They're just one retailer with an online shop and perhaps two outlets, that's all. It'd be more shocking if Free Record Shop or Bart Smit would decide to do the same, or Mediamarkt Holding. Still, the shop gave the reason that they make only €5,- on the console, while making nothing at all with the games.

Also, I foresee a bigger problem: There's political debates about non-removable batteries becoming a thing of the past by EU regulation. As a battery has to be able to be "readily removed" (EU guidelines on environmental friendliness). This means it should at least be removable by specialists. And we all know if they can do it, so can we.

This one is for Sony and those employees there that are trying to beat piracy:

.... so many employees there getting a high amount of money.. i bet they are intelligent otherwise they wouldn´t be there but somehow they aren´t using there intelligence or they aren´t doing there job well.

Piracy can´t be beaten like that... the only thing they are doing is just putting a big "FAIL" stamp at the new model face lol.. Piracy get stronger day by day while companies try to beat them.. by doing such non-sense they encourage hackers around the world to proof them wrong. and thats the time when piracy grows..

its sad that such Idiots there at Sony get so much money even if they aren´t using there brains at all lol. no UMD, no Battery replace(forcing people to send there devices to Sony).... WTF are they thinking?

.......... this is quite interesting too.

Exactly what I think, Sony needs serious restructuring in its gaming division. And fast because they are doing rubbish.

They are blatantly teasing pirates:
-"Oi, pirate, my console is unbreakable!"
-"Ah yeah? *grin*"
-"Yeah and you can't touch the battery to make your illegal things!"
-"That's all?"
-"What?"
-"Come tomorrow, I'll have a surprise for you *grin*"

And more: they are completely locking their own console. And who's gonna take on the face? The consumer...if he decides to buy it....

yea... the thing is they are trying to beat a monster by feeding it.. all they get with such moves is to make the monster bigger than what it is and destroy theirselfs. the solution to piracy is quite simple yet not easy for those idiots at big companies.

a wise men(my father) once said to me "If your enemy is bigger/stronger than you then join him, find his weakness and destroy him!.. that is the key to win" Piracy is quite strong and it grows because of a simple human nature of doing "What´s not allowed" to do.. humans tend to do what they aren´t allowed to do because it gets interesting or because they want to show what they got. buy doing such moves Sony or any company around the world with nerds on there game divisions just encourage talented hackers to crack there stuff and at the end bring what we know for the name "Piracy". the idea start when someone wants to proof them wrong... they put all there passion, time and talent into it and they definitely find a way out.. at the end the same way is used for other stuff such as running backups etc.

so what´s the point on closing doors on there devices??? to stop piracy or just to give the chance to a talented hacker to show what kind of idiots they are????

Sony definitely need new personal in there headquarters or gaming divisions.. they should hire: Squall, Schumi, Darksamus and many others here at ngemu that have enough intelligence/logic in one single cell to kick there actuall headquarters brain a**es.

Didn't read the whole poop in the first post, but if hackers really are interested..
they will do it arbitrarily within 2 weeks.. (where is Dark_Alex)!!!

Heck, who said that nobody hacked the psp3000, CFW enablers + ChickHEN = play ISOs
or CSOs in your psp3000! but most people are afraid to brick their PSPs..
anyways, for serious people, opening the psp and taking the battery and converting
it to pandora battery isn't that hard!

Yes, yes, because the DS was soooo piracy-proof, developers weren't afraid of getting their work stolen.

Wait, what?!? oO

PSP newbie question: What's the battery role in the anti-piracy thing? Like, if you won't be able to detach the battery from the console, you won't be able to access PSP's circuits?

Mire they used the psp battery to put the psp in service mode, that's the way hackers were able to downgrade and apply custom firmwares able to play backups from the memory card.

Well, this is quite an amusing move. It's like Sony is trying to say: "We are still using the battery to access service mode. You just can't remove or detach it from the handheld so easily anymore so harr harr harr!" :rotflmao:

No, I think the whole reason behind the battery's integration is quite simple: to save space.

But then... I'd suspect that Sony still uses the battery to access service mode, and when someone hacks that out, I'll laugh my @$$ off.

And to those who are detesting the integrated battery... gimme a count of the times you need to exchange your iPod battery. :p

as many times as it explodes?
Yeah, but that's in the minority. Removable PSP battery exploded as well, and usually, the system is damaged when that happens so it's an entirely new unit, not just the battery. ;)

Either way, the sales support Sony, and downloading cuts down costs for a physical media, thus making it easier for game developers. One reason why the AppStore is so popular.

Now if Sony would provide an SDK of sort that isn't too imposing. I can see some real potentials here. At least it'll be able to go against the iPod Touch. The problem here is the pricing. :innocent:

Perfectly true. The Iphone of one my friend died before the battery:lol:. This is the fact that they decide to not give access to it just because of piracy which is truly laughable. I bet the first people who are going to buy the PSP Go! will be....hackers.

And if you think on the long range, can I remind you that the battery replacement of an Iphone costs more than 80 dollars? I don't think Sony is going to make its "replacement battery program" for 10 dollars.

Knowing that if you are a daredevil like me who don't give a damn about warranty, you can replace your Iphone battery for less than 10 bucks....
