Problems with text in FF8 [SOLVED]

Wherever there is text in the game all I see is black boxes. I read some other threads with people having the same problem but none of the solutions worked for me. I'm using epsxe 1.6 and have tried both Pete's XGL2 driver 2.6 and Pete's MesaGL driver 1.75 with various configurations but none worked. I tried enabling the special game fix for ff8 but that didn't work either.
My system specs are CPU Amd64 3200+ Mobo Chaintech VNF4 Ultra (nforce4 chipset) and GPU is GeForce 6600GT PCIX. I'm using the latest x86_64 linux driver.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I think I have tried with every possible combination oO but none worked. I don't think its the plugin's fault because I even tried the soft plugin but still the same. Maybe I could try another emulator? If I could I would try pcsx but I can't compile it because I'm running 64bit system. I realy wanted to play ff8 but its completely unplayable. Anyway thanx for the help

i had the exact same problem. it went away for some reason after visiting this thread http://www.ngemu.com/forums/showthread.php?t=55664 and NOT, i repeat, NOT using save states or changing settings in game. if i set it to those settings and just loaded it up normally and didnt change filtering in game, that beginning text came up smooth and sexy. it's strange i know.

another good emulator you might want to try is PSXeven, i like it better than PCSX actually.

And it worked! :D Thank you all very much for helping. About PSXeven, I would try it but there is no linux version. A last question, if I use the save state from the menu will the problem reappear?

not sure about that, i guess you just have to do trial and error.

one thing though: always use memory card saves! memory card saves should be your main use, with save states coming in as backup saves, like when you have to leave your computer real fast or something. reason being, save states can be a little iffy. and you dont wnat your save stated fuxed when your last memory card was 6 hours back in the game ;)
