I don't know if I'm posting this in the right forum or not, but is there an emulator to allow older Windows software to run under WindowsXP? I've got a few old Windows games, made for Win9x, that don't work under WinXP. Is there such a thing as a Windows emulator for Windows?

I use DOSBox for running old DOS games already, and they're a bit on the slow side, even with DOSBox clocked up as high as my system can handle.

The game in question is for win9x and needs at least a Pentium II (no speed listed on the case) and 64MB RAM to run, not to mention it needs a 3D card as well. If it is possible to emulate win98 with DOSBox, it doesn't have the required instructions given that, as far as I know, DOSBox doesn't emulate any instructions more recent than a 486.

I think what I need is something that can map Win9x and earlier functions to WinXP ones. Does anyone know of such a program?

Also, is it possible to get a similar sort of program for use with software that requires an older version of DirectX and doesn't recognise DirectX 9.0c? 3DMark99 MAX and 3DMark2001 are offenders for this.

Well perhaps telling us what game it is might help.
edit: on the 3dMark issue: 99Max will not work in XP. Full stop. End of story. 2000 wilol tho with the latest patch on it.
It's some horse-riding game of my sister's, I don't have the case easily available at the moment, but I think it was called Equestriad 2001, or something like that. Tex Murphy Overseer doesn't work under WinXP, and even when I had Win98, I could never get the DVD version of the game to work.

Regarding 3DMark, it's 3DMark2001SE that won't work with DirectX 9, not 3DMark2000, that works fine. Shame to hear about 99Max not working at all under WinXP. I really wanted to see what it looks like. Anybody know why 3DMark 99Max and 2001SE don't think I've got a new-enough version of DirectX?
