Now that I've got pokemon pearl working, I cannot open my backpack in the game. It says that start = enter, i've tried that and failed, i've changed start to every different button on my keyboard and sitll can't get it to work. What do i do?

It says that start = enter? I seem to recall it being X....I might be wrong though, but I do remember that it's different to the Pokemon GBA games.
It definitely says enter, but anyway, I've changed it to multiple different keys, none of which work. What can I do?

No, I did not mean the button assignment, I meant that you use the "X" button rather than the "start" button to opne the backpack as far as I remember.
