Luckily, a couple pieces (like me) of the pSX Troubleshooting Team post here on these forums too... :D

But seriously, problems like this have occurred to a select few people (freezes during gameplay, especially after disc 1). There are two techniques I've discovered that can help get past this problem most of the time.

1) Try using a PAL BIOS. This being a copy-protected game, we have noticed that when they are not patched (and even occasionally when they are), random freezes can occur during gameplay, as well as when it starts. Using a PAL BIOS not only gets past the initial copy-protection screen, but it also has been known to get past these in-game freezes.

2) Try fast-forwarding past the freeze. That doesn't have too high of a success rate, but it's been known to work maybe half the time, depending on the game.

If neither of these work, let us know. Also, might be a good idea to tell which region the game is from. And what BIOS you're using. And are you using the latest version of pSX? Have you tried older versions? Please give the relevant information.

I had a problem almost like this and especially this one, too.
Don't know if problems are solved yet, but anyway...
the failure could be the choose of graphicsplugin, too. Former I had bad problems with dragoon specialattack sequences and solved it to acceptable performance by changing the plugins or the intern settings. Just another way to think of if problems get on your nerves.

Hello.

I'm coming here 15 years later just to tell that I managed to get a solution if you're using an emulator. It worked at least for me.

My advice is: save your game on memory card like a normal human person whenever it is possible/always, and avoid using save states especially prior/after boss battles.

I was getting the black screen after beating a Virage on Disc 3. The workaround was to load the save state that I have right after beating the Virage, but then choosing another path to the nearest save point and saving the game. After saving I got the black screen in one of the path transitions, so I loaded the save from the memory card (instead the save state) and then it worked properly.

In a few words: always avoid save states. They will mess with you.

Save states can be sometimes glitchy but a better solution to this would be to use a better emulator not one that wasn't updated in 15y and pretty much left unfinished.
Use Duckstation instead.
And if for some reason you must use a 15y old PC then get ePSXe still a better choice than pSX

Actually the workaround I mentioned was on ePSXe.
Never used duckstation and might be a better solution then. Thanks.
