you should tell us what spu you have tried. Also what's your system like.

The internal spu is great.

i've tried that null2 snu and the default epsx snu
sytem:
Dell Dimension XPS T600r (not the crappy dimension, the good one)
p3 600mhz
128 mb mem
about 1 gig of vmem (hard drive mem)
Nvidia TNT2
TBS Montego II Audio (sound card)

it's a great system for games and stuff, works superb, even with games like half life, quake3, rainbow 6, unreal tourn, etc
thought i'm thinking about getting more memory (win98 leaks memory badly, i have to restart the comp about once every 6 hours)

Why not give Iori's SPU (Sound Processing Unit) vers. 1.46 a try?
That is the one I use and I get excellent results in all my games. Even the speech in Dino Crisis is almost perfect.
sincerely,
sx/amiga

BTW there are some games that run into some kind of timing problem within ePSXe itself(not in the plugins) and can only be fully fixed with updates of ePSXe. MGS is an example of poor sound even with optimized plugins. There are many games that run perfectly with a good config, though. A good config depends on your hardware specs.
