odd problem

hi.. im playing zelda ocarina of time on PJ64. the game runs pretty smooth and graphics are good but there is one problem. instead of having the hearts in the upper left corner to show life... i have a pulsing gray square that is constantly there even during the opening dialogue. this also happens when i go to the equipment screen and when is supposed to say "A to equip" it just says "to equip" and instead of the A it has the gray square except its not moving. this happens other times also like when i get hit instead of link flahing red... i get a red square over my body instead but it goes away. can anyone help me please
