new graphics card and monitor

i really need a new graphics card sence im still running a nvidi gefore 7600 gs with 512 mbs of ram. ide say my needs would probably be to be future proof for the next few years and my budget would have to be upwards of $150-$200 and i dont care if its an ati or a nvidia grapgics card as of right now. its going to take me a few months to get the money i need but ill get it one way or another by say december. and im looking at a new monitor to go with this setup as well so pleas try and keep the combos around and under $500usd total please cuase thats how much i was planning on spending on a new 26' lcd tv

I wouldn't put anything expensive into it, if that's the case.

Get the monitor now, and either put in a cheap but decent GPU in, or skip on it entirely.

It won't be real powerful to get a lesser GPU, but the concept behind this is to put the money you save towards that new system. If you go and put a powerful GPU in it now, that's less money towards your build (especially if you need a new PSU for it, which it sounds like you will), and more time waiting, so by time you do get the new build, the card you get now will likely be nearing it's end (not the end of usability, but the end of being really good and worth putting into a system that's new a year from now), and the PSU won't be as good as one you can get if you wait.

I'd say either skip on the new GPU entirely, or get one that's cheap and will work with your current PSU (something like a GeForce 8800GT/9800GT may be the limits I'd push with that PSU).

As for the monitor, if that'll be carried over, splurge now. I wouldn't go any lower than 1920x1200. Physical size isn't as important as quality.

thats what i was thinking i would just spluge ont he monitor now and just delgate this to linux once ive got the money for the new system. ill just use one of my crts for this system when that time comes. ive got like 3 different crts to use. im just using the largest one now. plus i wouldnt say the new monitor would be the otherthing to carry over. i would carry over my speakers as well as mabe my x-fi extremegamer sound card as well sence this sytem has decent onboard audio and thats about all i would need for linux. and im glad it has an nvidia card and ati doesnt work all to well on linux as ive herd.the current grapgics card is an add on card lol.
There's a difference between a 26" LCD television and a 26" LCD monitor.
If you click on any of the links I provided you will see I was looking at monitors, not tv's and I looked in the "PC monitor" section

How can what I did be wrong?
There's nothing "wrong" with it, per se. You told him he couldn't get a 26" monitor for the kind of money he was spending when he never stated he wanted a 26" monitor. What he stated was that he was originally going to get a 26" television for the money, but instead wanted to put the same amount of money towards the monitor, but never was it said that it necessarily had to be a 26" monitor, so your comment of "you'll have to stretch your budget to get what you want" seemed out of place, because he never stated he wanted that. It seemed to me like you read that as though he wanted a 26" monitor, hence my reply of "there's a difference between a 26" LCD television and a 26" LCD monitor".
correct lord z i didnt say it had to be a 26 inch just that i was going to put the money down on a 26 inch tv
its been a week. if the graphics card did decide to die in this computer what would you reccomend i replace it with?
You should get an S3 Virge... or maybe one of the upcoming nVidia GT300 based GPUs. I dunno. Sometimes I get confused about which one is better.

... GTX275.
ive already stated i would wait to get one once i get the money around for a new system. i was just wondering what would people reccomend i put in this one in case the grphics card decides to go out on me.
S3 Trio 3D

Are you serious? oO S3 was crap. The only really noteworthy thing they did was create a standard for texture compression. (S3TC)

@Lasnap:

Are you asking about a card to hold you over with on your current system or a card to use on your current system and then carry over onto your new (yet to be built) system?
you clearly don't know much about the S3 Trio 3D xD
Ati hd4650.

Guess not. :/

I remember the epic fail known as ViRGE. Wasn't Trio 3D based off ViRGE? Besides, by the time Trio 3D was around, I had my Rage128+Voodoo2 and later, my TNT2 Ultra. Ah, those were the days.
Trio 3D was based off of the 64V line but succeeded the Virge DX/GX2
Ati hd4650.
oO DDR2? That'd be a terrible decision. You don't want anything less than a 4670 / 3850 level card nowadays, and for $20,- more you can get much better performance even. The problem would be power usage of course, perhaps a 4770 would be nice?
I was suggesting a temporary solution until he gets a brand new system. I think that's what he's asking for in his last post. The HD4650 also has an AGP variant so if his mobo doesn't support PCIe then it's a pretty decent and cost-effective solution.
I'd rather recommend an nvidia for agp then a ATi... since HD2XXX non of the ati cards where meant for agp of course AMD was good enough to release fixes (not that they where obliged since they clearly stated that there new boards aren't meant for agp) but still...
Dunno about other places, but the best AGP Nvidia card available here is an Inno3D FX5500 :p
its a socket 939 sli motherboard so i do have one pcie x16 and 2 pciex8s and i was asking for one that would stay in this system becuase ill be putting linux on it and running that. oncwe i get the money for a new system and i was oping not to spend to much for a new card incase the 7600gs goes out. ive had some issues but nothing major yet. im just asking as a precussionary measure incase something does happen

lol i was sure there where at least some 7XXX agp versions though now the only agp nvidia components available here to are 5500/6200 as for newegg i found a 7600 but its not worth it 84$ way better to go with the ati...

found this for him: Newegg.com - DIAMOND 4650512A Radeon HD 4650 512MB 128-bit GDDR3 AGP 8X HDCP Ready Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards though i don't know much about Diamond...

Scratch that now i see his post with having PCI-express :p i'd say wait a little to see what ati has to offer for there new HD5XXX mid range cards.
