Well, i guess it depends from person to person. And you drive outside the car view? Yer missing one of the best features of the game which driving inside the cuckpit (XD) :)
The game gears more on simulator rather than arcadey racing, grid is a bit more arcadey imo. GRID's graphics is good, despite having that annoying brownish post process (which can be modded) but i also like SHIFT's more natural post process/lighting style.
Btw, posted some videos in the video and pics thread...

ah yeah, the textures are not that of high quality indeed, specially when AF is low or off,and the trees are not nice looking too. Good thng you dont mind it when racing. Dunno about porsche unleashed. Its one of the first sims i liked but its not that challenging to drive the cars, even the gtr variant

So I got the NFS-Shift Demo......

Would someone please tell me which setting I have to turn off(or on) to get a small, sleek and agile Lotus Elise rather than a 40000 ton Oiltanker?

There's one thing which Shift does a lot better than GRID though...colours, it looks a lot more exciting than GRID, which has some sort of gloom filter going on....although I still have to try those mods Cid mentioned.

Tried both keyboard and my Logitech Rumblepad 2 (set up as generic gamepad cuz I did not see it in the preset options)...too lazy to check if my old (and thus unsupported) Logitech Formular Force GP Steering wheel has any more luck.

Tried all assists and easiest setting...try with most assits off (which game me pretty much the same experience except keeping a straight line was hard), tried with old assists off that I thought were causing problems (stability control, traction control, and steering assistance as well as breaking assistance)...nothing no luck still almost impossible to take a corner properly and no I am not playing this like an arcade racer so I am breaking propperly and basically trying to drive like I would in GRID or TOCA2...no luck...

Don't remember their names at the moment, check the rating of current game you're playing thread, Cid linked me to a vid and description of them.

@schumi: im also using a rumblepad 2, but im using the G27 profile (or any other steering wheel profile) to make the steering wheel much responsive (same i did with GRID), although some (or most folks) dont like it.
I guess it depends on your driving preferences. IMO, the game is already easier compared to GTR series, perhaps if you played that you could drive a little easier in this one.

There are a couple of mods already for SHIFT as some folks figured out how to unpack the files of the game. Ill try to get the lesser AI aggression next time :)

BTW, made another video

Perhaps I will try using the G27 profile then...
Anyways the problem aint with my driving ability...which I admit might be a little more arcady....it's that a small agile car feels like a giant immovable hunk of metal (unless it's going in a straight line)....

It reminds me of what appears to be my FIA-GTR curse....every single car in the game with every possible combination of assists on or off, on my keyboard, controller, and steering wheel and on 3 seperate systems (family computer, my first computer, my current system) has perhaps at most 10 degree turning ability...and that's when going just 10 km/h....except Shift is a little better..there I probably get say 35 degrees...and when using the handbreak I do get a propper turn, but it's way too wild to be usable at the moment.

There was an elise challenge in the game but i don't find it that heavy, i find it quite easier to handle actually because of its small size...
Have you properly used the analog functionality of your controllers? messed up with the deadzones, sensitivity etc.? How about not stepping a full throttle on corners or doing a "running brake"?
One big limitation i find with keyboards with this kind of game (sims) is digital control, its almost impossible to do precision steering and throttling/braking with a digital device, unless yer using some assists, but even with that you can't fully exploit the cars potential.
I rarely use the handbrake on this game or similar game, unless its drifting or a rally sim

Yeah I think I will have to dust off the old Logitech Formula Force GP for this one if I do get it.
And I found the offending setting...actually I don't know how I overlooked it...but with mouse and keyboard as well as the Generic settings it sets Steering Sensitivity to 100%...so as soon as I accelerate a little my car turns into a ping-pong ball inevitably bouncing off anything and everything cuz it almost entirely loses it's ability to turn.

And yeah I know I should not use the handbrake in this type of game...but when my car has no turning ability that's the last resort.

Now I just need to practice not counter-steering too much and sending the car into a spin...but meh I got plenty of time seeing as at best this will be a bargain bin pickup for me...or perhaps I will cave in before then once it reaches say $20, but there's no way in hell I will be picking up EA Race Driver Ripoff (or RRP if you prefer)- SHIFT for fullprice.

Steering sensitivity was not the cure for FIA-GTR by the way..it gave me just enough turning ability to spin the car when going say 20 to 30km/h but beyond that I still had only about 5 degrees of turning ability.

Update: Okay so I decided what the hell keyboard was not working and the Gamepad was barely better (countersteering was never working out usually ending up in a spin or me just wildly zigzagging across the track till I finally ended up in the gravel) so I thought I might as well try Logitech (Wingman) Formula Force Wheel and I used the Logitech Driving Force Ex preset changing one or two buttons cuz my Wheel just has 6 buttons VS the Driving Force Ex's 10 and DAAAAAAAAMMMMMMNNNNNN what a difference, never have I encountered a game which shows such a huge improvement when using a Wheel and rarely have I encountered a game which uses a Wheel so well. Other games tend to lag when using the wheel but not this one.

So now I have to amend my opinion of SHIFT, it's a lame ripoff sellout game, just copying GRID's winning forumula, with an incredibly solid driving experience providing you have a wheel or I guess I joystick would work just as well (an analog stick on a gamepad is nowhere near the same thing) (with a keyboard or gamepad it's a shakey unplayable mess). So I henceforth recommend SHIFT for people that have a wheel but feel they have nothing to use it with...or people that have a Joystick which they feel like using on a racing game (despite it almost being a little like cheating).
