A lot of interesting things have been happening in N64 emulation. Texture dumping and replacement within games are transforming old dull N64 games into something extraordinary. Progress has be slow but several games have had some of their ingame textures redone at higher resolutions and then used in the games themselves while playing. It's a sight to behold especially when you compare them side by side.

Here is a small example from Mario 64 which will be followed with other Higher Resolution N64 textured games.

Here is the original textured of the Mario64 title screen:

Here is the same scene but with it's textures redone at higher resolution and edited.

Here are some more screens ingame of Mario 64 and other games.

That's amazing! I'm assuming you're using Rice's plugin, aren't you? Does the plugin automatically filter the dumped textures, or do they have to be manually filtered using an image-editing program?
Most the the redone textures have had some filtering done on them. Most were redone from scratch though by some very tallented graphic artists. The video plugin also has some filters, but they don't work very well on the standard low resolution N64 textures. On the redone textures, it's quite amazing what N64 games look like.

if you remember that a rom is really many files made to look like a single file this will be easier to explain. how i THINK it works is that the emulater would do something like this

when the emu makes a request for a texture.. lets say "ZeldaLogo.tex" the emu would check a folder on your computer for a file with the same name and load it. if there is no file in that folder it'll load the roms default texture.

Been looking around emutalk, but how big can the textures be scaled up to? Like double the original resolution, higher?

Cool. Show us some progress if you start your own retexturing project.

did anyone try to patch his rom and upload it to N64 cardrige and run it on his N64 console? :)
That wouldn't be possible since a real N64 console would not have enough Vram for the increased texture sizes.
