Multitasking?

Whenever I use this emulator, I can't control my game when i don't have it as the main active window. I have 2 monitors and generally have someone else using the keyboard and surfing the net while I play, but the controller doesn't send commands if ePSX is not the active window. is there any way to change the setting for this?
