Microsoft is working with Ford Motor Co towards car that can't crash. The future of cars according to Gates will involve high-definition screens, speech recognition technology, cameras, digital calendars and navigation equipment with directions and road conditions." From the article: "Also on Friday, Microsoft unveiled its Performance Peak Initiative -- a line of computer systems to help the auto industry better coordinate supply chains, streamline design, production and sales and fill vehicles with computer gadgets.

How can 'Microsoft' and 'can't crash' be put in the same sentence? :p

Your car executed an illegal operation and crashed in a brick wall. Press any key to continue.

Of course these Microsoft cars won't crash, they are incompatible with most of the roads and therefore can not be driven.

i'd think that microsoft would want to make a new OS that is in no way simular to windows or anything else they have and based it on a chip that is fairly obscure.

OK! I so had this idea 5 years ago, with sensors and stuff. And my (future) car was not running windows so it wouldnt crash. Seems bill is stealing ideas again.

All joking aside, I'd like to see if this can really be pulled off. I'd always assumed it wasn't possible, but if they think they can do it then I'm all for it. Driving is probobly the most risky thing people do on a daily baisis, so I think it goes without saying that this would save a lot of lives...

this reminds of something I saw a few years ago on tv: cars that drives by themselves. they use the lines on the side of the road or smth iirc. so you can "call" your car, and it will drive to your location by itself. it even notices road signs. pretty neat. I wonder if such cars will ever be mass-produced :D

This thread immediately reminded me of this oooolllldd joke

At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly
compared the computer industry with the auto industry and
stated:
"If GM had kept up with technology like the computer
industry has, we would all be driving twenty-five dollar cars
that got 1000 miles to the gallon."

In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press
release stating:

If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all
be driving cars with the following characteristics:

1. For no reason whatsoever your car would crash twice a day
2. Every time they repainted the lines on the road you would
have to buy a new car.
3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no
reason, and you would just accept this, restart and drive
on.
4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn,
would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in
which case you would have to reinstall the engine.
5. Only one person at a time could use the car, unless you
bought "Car95" or "CarNT." But then you would have to
buy more seats.
6. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun,
reliable, five times as fast, and twice as easy to drive,
but
would only run on five per cent of the roads.
7. The oil, water temperature and alternator warning lights
would be replaced by a single "general car default" warning
light.
8. New seats would force everyone to have the same size butt.
9. The airbag system would say "Are you sure?" before going
off.
10. Occasionally for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock
you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously
lifted the door handle, turned the key, and grab hold of the
radio antenna.
11. GM would require all car buyers to also purchase a deluxe
set of Rand McNally road maps (now a GM subsidiary), even
though they neither need them nor want them. Attempting to
delete this option would immediately cause the car's
performance to diminish by 50% or more. Moreover, GM would
become a target for investigation by the Justice Department.
12. Everytime GM introduced a new model car buyers would
have to learn how to drive all over again because none of
the
controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.
13. You'd press the "start" button to shut the car down.

(this is actually closer to 25-30% nowadays ;) ) /me pets his ibook
6. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun,
reliable, five times as fast, and twice as easy to drive,
but
would only run on five per cent of the roads.

I'll keep driving my no-crap BMW kthx. I don't need no stinking computer to tell me what is good for me and what not. If i decide to crash my car, i will crash my car...

anyway, renault proved over and over again, that software and cars are not a very well combination.(laguna = 1 big driving blue screen). I'll just have an engine, steering rack and wheels. a go-kart would be even better :D

Heh, "Microsoft" and "can't crash" used in the same sentence . . .

But hey, he might be on to something . . . this way, in the unlikely event that your car DOES crash, all you have to do is restart it ;)

Of course, any faults in the car's performance can be easily fixed by installing a new driver :D

using the right amount of sensors and gps data and telemetry this is fully possible, its just like an advanced version of the a.i. cars in GTA tell it where you want to go and using data from gps, traffic light towers and other external cars (distance sensors) you can easily mappout and drive that car by computer, no person required.
