Hi all,

I have read alot about the various MGS issues on the forum. With
some of the new plug-ins (ex. Eternal SPU), some of these problems are supposed addressed (by various postings) ...

If it's not too much trouble, can someone give a list of the things that are still problematic with MGS on ePSXe, and give a full config listing of their plug-in config?

So that this thread can be reference by any future inquiries about MGS. ;)

I noticed most of the problem fix has been tested on GeForce cards, (I'm running ATI Radeon DDR, which is another popular choice) ... I'd like to try out the afore-mentioned config and see if they are fixes for ATI as well. :p

Sorry about the long-winded message.

My PC Config is:
Intel P4 1.4 GHz CPU
ATI Radeon DDR 64MB Video Card
Sound Blaster Live! X-Gamer 5.1

MDEC crashes in ePSXe 1.40 is probably on the only lingering issue right now, but you could use FPSE 0.9, ePSXe 1.0.1, or simply disable the MDECs to get around this problem.

the video is perfect under pete's OGL 1.54 GPU, just use PC FPS calculation in game fixes.

As for sound, the External SPU 1.1 is currently the best choice, however there are still a few bugs in MGS's SPU emulation, but they are really minor now...sometimes the dialouge de-syncs in long cut sceens but that's it.

once the dialouge is fixed, I think I can finally retire VGS.

Eternal 1.1 SPU used on Radeon cause substantial performance degredation during cutscenes. (I was unable to make it run well),
Pete's SPU 1.1 still seems the best choice by far ... except it cause
the speech and text mis-sync substantially.

Some people in the past suggested the extensive lagging between sound and text display eventually causes MGS to crash ... is that still the case in ePSXe 1.4.0?

I am using the eternal spu with MGS with lewpys glide pluggin running on my voodoo 5.. It runs pretty good.. A lot better than petes dsound pluggin.. And the text during cutscenes don't lag as much anymore.. They are in sync when the cut scenes start but get desynced after watching the cut scene for a while.. Its way better than the desyncs with petes dsound pluggin though..

Lewpsy's plug-in only works well on 3dfx cards (ex. Vodoo), ATI Radeon is not part of that family unfortunately.

Since Iori's SPU and Eternal SPU both causes substantial performance hit on ATI Radeon ... I'm pretty much stuck with Pete's SPU until a better solution presents itself.

Any user of ATI family out there that got MGS running good on Eternal?

This is indeed the case. In long 3D conversations, ePSXe would sometimes just stop. I could press ESC to get out, but that was all I could do.

As for SPUs... Eternal 1.1 is by far the best SPU available right now, IMHO. It doesn't give a performance hit at all on my GeForce2MX/Cele500MHz/128 MB RAM PC, and the sound is fantastic. The only problems are that the text lag is still there (though much less so) and the SPU stutters when picking up items/changing weapons.

You make me almost wish I have a GeForce card ;)

Below is an quote from my comments on ATI Radeon with ePSXe
(posted in the plug-in section):

"
From what I can recall, I haven't see any instance of Radeon + gfx setting running well yet. This is mainly due to the fact that ATI texture mapping technique is significantly different from nVidia or Vodoo technology (texture is ATI's main strength actually).

It would be very nice to have a GPU plug-in that utilizes the ATI texture techniques, we should observe a huge graphic quality and speed improvement for ePSXe, if that's the case ... Now I'm just day-dreaming ...

It can crash at other places too.but the biggest known one point is when you will face revolver ocelot first time.

Carlos, from what i've seen here, MGS Mdecs causes a black screen freeze on ePSXe. Such MDECs are very rare in the game (about 2 I think) and they are: After the Ninja fight, in the lab room. And in the ending. Sorry if I can't help more, but I don't have the game (have the PC version) ;)

here is a save state of before the first crash.
The crash happens after you fight ocelot.

The savestate is from the NTSC SLUS_005.94 version of MGS.

Hey liquid,
Thats what I meant,it crashes after fighting ocelot.
I also used your memory card but in windows me it just crashes the emulator and returns to the desktop without giving any warning messages after beating ocelot.

I think next version of epsxe and the mdec problem may be solved.:)

Hehehe, you seem to be in bad shape in MGS ;)
Ocelot isn't that hard to beat. Just run and when he's on a corner, or stops to reload, you shoot him with your socom pistol.

[edit] Oh yeah, after you beat him, the ninja appears and attack ocelot. In that part there's a lot of cdrom access and the dreadfull ninja effect (transparent polys like the predator effect)
