I've only tested two PSX games in the latest Mednafen beta and they happened to run better than any other emulator (Front Mission 3 and Pandemonium 2)
But it's really worth the time to configure the options/keys. Sorry for bumping the thread, but this emu needs more attention and there are WIP versions out for the 0.9 branch, so this belongs here.
EDIT: I use MedGUI, too, makes life easier.
