Well, it looks like the success of Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare titles is apparently inspiring more than open wallets and online trash talk…EA today revealed its plans to “reboot” the long-running Medal of Honor franchise into modern times with the announcement of a new game taking place in Afghanistan and coming our way for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

Here’s the press release:

Medal of Honor returns to the front lines, this time in today’s war. For the first time in the franchise’s 10-year history, Medal of Honor is leaving the WWII theatre and putting players in war-torn Afghanistan. Electronic Arts Inc. today revealed that in 2010, Medal of Honor, an all-new first-person shooter game, will introduce the Tier 1 Operator: a relatively unknown entity directly under the National Command Authority who takes on missions no one else can handle. The development team has been working closely with Tier 1 Operators from the US Special Operations Community since the earliest stages of development to create the most authentic modern war experience. Inspired by real events, Medal of Honor reveals the mission of today’s most elite soldier – his will, his mindset and his uncompromising professionalism.

Medal of Honor is being built with a best-in-class single-player campaign. The Medal of Honor development team at EALA has been hand-selected by the studio leadership of General Manager Sean Decker, Executive Producer Greg Goodrich and Senior Creative Director Rich Farrelly. To compliment the single-player experience, EALA has enlisted the multiplayer expertise at EA DICE. This team will develop the multiplayer experience of Medal of Honor. These two studios are coming together to deliver a world-class Medal of Honor that is poised to re-set and re-boot the franchise for a new generation.

“When we first set out to reinvent Medal of Honor, we wanted to stay true to its roots of authenticity and respect for the soldier but bring it into today’s war. The Tier 1 Operator is the most disciplined, deliberate and prepared warrior on the battlefield. He is a living, breathing, precision instrument of war.” said Greg Goodrich, Executive Producer, Medal of Honor. “We are honored to have the rare opportunity to work closely with these men to create a game that shares their experience.”

“EA has always been an advocate for telling the soldiers’ story. The new Medal of Honor follows that tradition. We felt it was important to tell the story of today’s war and today’s elite soldiers via today’s most relevant medium – videogames,” said Sean Decker, VP and General Manager of EALA. “We are so proud to bring together two powerhouse development teams to make this game a reality; EA Los Angeles and EA DICE. Medal of Honor promises to be an unforgettable entry in the modern shooter genre.”

Tune in to Spike TV’s 2009 Video Game Awards on Saturday, December 12 at 8pm PST for a world-premier first-look at Medal of Honor.

Of course, we’ll keep you posted on any new details regarding the game as soon as they emerge. Check out the first teaser for the VGA’s below.

I'm glad they are moving away from the WWII shooter genre, its been done to death. Although I am interested how they will fare against the Modern Warfare series, if the game is going to be as magnificent as that guys beard, we could be in for something rather good.

OOH! We get to go after radical Islamic Terrorists? suicide bombers? maybe even get to try and stop a terrorist attack on civilians without hurting any civilians? That would be cool!

Does no one else get the feeling that in a year or two we will be saying ' I wish they would stop making 'Middle East' shooters.

There's only so many campaigns they can do before they begin to rehash similar environments and mission goals.

Only if people buy every one of them, and by doing so it encourages such behavior from the software companies.

I never expected Medal of Honor turning into a sandbox game.

...there's one possible downfall:

2 separate bits of EA developing the 2 bits of the game will need A LOT of good communication. and with EA, that is doubtful. so inconsistencies in single and multi gameplay could emerge. but saying that the multi could turn out awesome while single could turn out **** as a result of lack of communication between both dev teams.

As long as there's testosterone in this world there will be glorification of violence.

The day there's no more demand for violent games we most likely will see the end of human reproduction. So live with it :p

I don't know if it started it, but it certainly contributed. Of course it all began with Wolfenstein, but you can't call it realistic. I know Hidden & Dangerous was popular as well, and perhaps even older.

Also, I don't think there's that many World War 1 games. To be honest I'd rather play well written fiction still.

Well it's not violence 'itself' that's disturbing me, it's the way they make games and money out of a reality that's definitely no laughing matter.
It's just disrespectful toward the people suffering and dying.

We hoomanz are champions at distorting reality, okay, but I d'ont like to see video games used the same way as the news on tv for instance.

Keeping violence imaginary and phantasmagoric in games at least isn't wrong IMO, it's even useful in some ways. But bringing the stupidity and cruelty of actual horrible events in video games is kind of ... sullying.

Stop ****ing up the art of video games EA !

MoH REMOVING ITSELF FROM WWII ? zOMG CRAZY EA !!!!!!!!

Really, the LAST series i expected to do this would have to be MoH. EVERY single MoH game, iir, is set in WWII. Why deviate ??? To cash in on Awesome-Incarnate, IW's success with the help of ZZ Top ???

Don't worry, once US is done with the middle east they will turn their geopolitical eye towards another war. Well have games based in china and north korea in no time.

In 30 years there will be games where you play as a freedom-loving corporate security officer who must save america by liquidating hippy american dissidents (aka evil terrorists) who are attempting to bring down (terrorize) your selfless philanthropic trillion dollar multinational corporate conglomerate employer.

I think if you are seriously upset with this, I'd target my anger at weapon companies and governments instead. You may want to look into your insurance company, bank and retirement funds as well, seeing how those are commonly investing money in dodgy warfare funds and weapon companies because of the high profitability.

You have a point yeah. It was also one of my worries that they'd probably make it a glorification of the American army while portraying the people there as helpless poppy seed producers who all hate the help they are offered out of the goodness of the hearts of western politicians.... I sincerely hope it will be more representative than the news we get to see on this topic :)
